Hi, What's the preferred software for studying databases of games these days? I'm looking for something for my laptop that I can use for opening analysis, and compile games from a database for variation study etc. Free, payware, any suggestions are welcome. Thx

Depending on how seriously you are about tournament play. If you're rated high enough and if you're planning to take it competitive tournament play seriously for a while then Chessbase is the best. I've personally started playing a lot of 2000+ players and I recently got chessbase 17.

For Freeware, there's SCIDvsPC software. I've been using it for ~1 year, but there's a learning curve since there's no centralized support (i.e.- complete user's manual). It fits my needs for now. I can look up historic games, and add any games that I'm interested in from Chess Life or other sources. Chessbase is great, but costly. If you have the bucks, maybe go with Chessbase. I'm retired and have plenty of time to futz with SCIDvsPC.
