I'm running Ubuntu 8.10. I'll have to install Crafty and figure out how to play by command line. Have you played that way?

Hydroxide, Jester from LudoChess will let you do that without installing any software. It also is very configurable from a difficulty-level perspecitve.

chesspublishing.com used to have a online book about blinfold chess, and a program for developing blindfold skills. I'm not currently a subscriber so I don't know if it is there. I am pretty sure Fritz, and Chessmaster have the ability to do blindfold chess.

It's still there for gold members. It helps you improve your board visualization by asking questions like, "What colour is c4?" and "Are c7 and a5 on the same diagonal?". A free online program that does similar things is Chess Eye.

In my opinion, it is very disturbing if you see a board when playing blindfold chess, even if the pieces are invisible. The training effect is only given if you cannot see a board. Unfortunately, almost all GUIs do not allow for this feature. Only Shredder with its original GUI (not the chessbase GUI) has such an option. There you can remove the board and enter the moves by keyboard. www.shredderchess.com
