Good review! I also enjoyed and really benefited from this book. I especially like the fact that almost every position is illustrated. I find the algebraic notation too awkward to follow (or, stated another way, am not willing to work that hard at it). Are there other good chess books that avoid the algebraic notation?

I'm not aware of any chessbooks worth reading (other than the present one) that avoid algebraic notation. I think if you spend a maximum of 15 minutes (possibly a lot less!) learning algebraic notation, you will become an expert at it!....it's easier than you think...

I’m in Chess Club for my school and wonder if i should start out with Winning Chess instead of this Bobby Fischer classic.

It should be noted that not only is the book not a comprehensive introduction to chess, it is also not a comprehensive introduction to chess tactics. It is about back-rank mates, and nothing more.
Still, this is a very good choice of a first step.

So should I get Winning Chess then?

Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess first, and Winning Chess second.
A nice uno-dos punch!

Too late, I’ve already ordered the Winning Chess. I went to the bookstore earlier to look at the Bobby Fischer book. I saw that it was just a bunch of tactics and the left side was upside down for learning reasons.

patiently waiting for this book to arrive in my mailbox brought it a week ago online at book depository for $12

Winning Chess by Irving Chernev takes up (with more tactical ideas) where Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess leaves off. I recommend for the beginner to study both, in order - Bobby Fischer first, followed by Winning Chess.
