I have been in serach of a book titled, "The great Grandmasters:a study" authored by Tigran Petrosian. No, Google search has not been fruitful. Has anyone at least heard of a such a title?

NO - maybe you could try locating it thru the Library of Congress - if it exists that is: a blank Google search is pretty discouraging here.

Hi Shiva -- Bet you were reading Forsyth's "The Negotiator" and saw the reference to it there.  Actually, you got it slightly wrong.  The Book referred is "The Great Grand Masters: A Study;" it doesn't say who the author is, but says that there is a chapter in the book about Tigran Petrosian.  It also says that the English translation is a "private edition."  I searched for it and couldn't find it.  But there is quite a lot out there about Tigran Petrosian which might be interested.  By the way, the reference is on page 435 of "The Negotiator." Hope this helps -- JJ

Hi JJ,

You are amazing. Yes, you have guessed right indeed. In fact, I had noted down the name of the book in my diary a couple of years ago and had forgotten all about it. Then, as you too had gone through; an exhaustive search with no results worth mentioning other than your reply here. A million thanks again.

But would you suggest that if at all a book by the title does exist, it may be in a foreign language like Russian or Armenian?

Hi Shiva,

In Forsyth's book it does say that it was an "English private translation" of a Russian book.  So, apparently it is either a real Russian book and there is only a private English translation (which is not available to the public), or Forsyth just took some literary liberty and made the book up.  As with you, I couldn't find it anywhere either.  Maybe you should write Forsyth and ask him.

Best regards,

JJ

Hi JJ,

Hmmmm.... At least the Russian book is not private. I dont think the title may pertain to what NMZaidejasChEgis has posted above. Yes, I have already drafted a letter to FF which I shall be sending shortly.

Thanks again,

SS (No pun intended. My initial indeed is 'S' )

Tigran was removed from the editorship of the magazine at a later stage. Tne reason I persume is the fall out with the Communist Party.

"Great World Chess players" is an option that can be explored further. What do you think JJ?

Thank you NM. Since I have an excellent knowledge of Russian (Just saying Pravada, takes up 90% of my Russian vocabulary) I am seeking a friend's help. I shall keep you updated if anything turns up. Thanks again

Thank you NM. But then, do you feel that the title may pertain to the same on the initial post viz. "The great Grandmasters:a study"

Hi guys

I am completely new to Chess but this exact section of FF’s book left a lasting impression – especially the simple yet true supremacy of deception skills in Chess compared to card games, due to the fact that everything is happening in plain sight.

Although my hope is very low that I might revive a 9 year old forum thread: Has anyone found out (or maybe even been told by FF) which book he was referencing in “The Negotiator”.

It is well known that a majority of the references and “props” in his books were based on true facts – though sometimes with slight alterations.

So I wouldn’t be overly suprised if “The Great Grand Masters: A Study.” is indeed based on a real book, maybe even part of FF’s own collection.

Thanks a lot in advance!
