Boxes and bags

Nice little bag. 👍
And DKW … you’ve got your photo editing skills happening…. adding dogs, changing bags …. but it’s a bit too confusing for me! I don’t know what I’m looking at and maybe that’s the point and the lesson? Who knows reality today?🤦‍♂️

Well, my "Smilco" wooden box has finally arrived from the US (€ 60.37 incl shipping), and while I'm very happy with it considering the price (and would never even entertain the thought of buying one of those overpriced leatherette boxes from India), here's a few observations:

It comes with a paper bag inside, I guess the purpose of it is to put your stuff into the bag, and then the bag into the box. I certainly won't need it.

The box itself is certainly well-made and has nice precious wood veneer. I had to dust it off inside to get rid of the wood dust from production though.

The hinges feel sturdier than some.

The lock and key aren't quite as precisely engineered as advertised though.

What surprised me is that although the dimensions are very similar to the cheaper laminated wood boxes I bought this year from German Amazon (current price is €30), my largest set, a 4.6" King Arthur set, doesn't fit into the Smilco box. I guess the maximum king's height for the Smilco box is somwehere around 4.3" or 4.4" max.

And although the lid of the Smilco box fits more neatly onto its body, it doesn't have an extra nut like the one from German Amazon to protect the inside from outside humidity interference.

Yes, the Smilco box is better made (I bought 5 of those German Amazon boxes, and there are ill-fitted lids here and there, and one had a crack in the bottom, so I had to send it back), and made of more precious veneer.

But given the price difference and all that I'm in no hurry to order more of the Smilco boxes. Of course, for American customers the prices might end up the other way around.

Nice review @Chessmaster_diamond!

The box is nice but I feel that it won't work in protecting chess pieces from scratched and dents.

A cushioned support or compartment style box would be better suited for such intricately carved chessmen.

What are you doing with your chess boxes? Swing them around while dancing to "La Cucaracha"?

I think the most easiest way to store a complete chess set with it's chessboard is to create a custom size wooden box with wooden storage box manufacturer.

I used bnwoodenbox to make one for my marble chess set and here is the image of it. So if you want a box like that you can visit there site or directly contact on support@

I enjoy finding humidors an ebay when in need of a box, then line with felt adhesive pads - including a divider (too many forced readings of ‘Mending Wall’ in elementary school!). Is there a *need* for sturdy boxes? No, absolutely not for most of my sets, but there is a certain comfort (if not joy) in ensuring they have a good roof over their heads. 😂🤓

Upper right - details if you have them, please!

GPDave,

If it’s the one with the board carved into the top, I can tell you where to find it, but won’t recommend it. I carved the board design into the top and built dividers inside to house an 1830s Selenus Tulip set in bone, and added the felt and the foam. I guess it works for this particular set though.

Copy that, thanks for the info. Very nice work improving the basic box!

As my woodworking skills are good only for making toothpicks, sawdust, and injuries I found this box from Chess House - my wife likes it enough to have it out instead of sequestered in my office! tongue

@ GPDave - Now THAT is a beauty!

Yes, that's gorgeous

I put my Philippine Staunton Pieces in a woven sea weed box, I found at IKEA. The pieces were sent to me in a zip lock bag, so I think anything is an improvement.

DelphinSnow,

Where are the pieces from? From what is visible in that Easter basket, it looks like a beautiful set.

I got mine from a private seller from Ebay for 18 Euros. If you are looking for a set, Holger (@EfimLG47), who is a member here, had a whole crate full a while ago. He might still have a set.
