Buying chess books in London??

I am going to London for a few days. Where is the best Chess Book Shopping? The Chess & Bridge stores are very good but a bit expensive. What are the alternatives?

The internet is the best place to buy books... more choice, reviews and better prices (due to lower overheads). Enjoy London for other reasons: free art galleries, free museums, history a plenty and the best nightlife. Smile

The best place selection wise would be the London Chess Centre on Euston Road.  Alternatively, Foyles on Charing Cross road has got a pretty good selection.

Ray is right though - get that stuff from the internet and spend your time in London doing other stuff

Agreed! Internet is most bang for the buck! However, I can do Internetshopping from Sweden and I have cravings for some IRL shopping.

Chess books can be purchased anywhere, they'll just be more expensive in London, however it is an excellent place to buy clothes: try Camden Town, Oxford Street and Covent Garden (all stops on the Underground system). There are also excellent markets; Petticoat Lane (leatherware especially) and Portabello Road (good retro clothing).

LOL!

I know what you mean, it would be cool to check out a chess store in London just for the atmosphere. All I can say is use the internet, not to shop for books but to look for a place to shop for books. Wink

She'll love you all the more for it! Everyone loves Abba.... don't they? Undecided

Oh, the London smog will make my sideburns grow and I will dazzle her with some fancy unisex velour (proper word?) outfit!

I suppose airport security will go berserk if I try to fly home in that outfit!

London has several good chess stores. I visited them while i was there for a weekend this summer. Very happy with what i bought, some of them also has a cool section of used books, very cheap and very cool! I seen some old kings gambit books too and just some books that you wouldnt be able to buy nowadays. London is quick and easy to get around so you should check the stores out, they dont have all of the used books on their websites so dont miss out the opportunity to pick up some gems! The london chess centre hosts different events in the evenings i think so check it out before you go, there could be something good on, like a GM talk or whatever.

The British Chess Magazine Chess shop is on Baker Street, which is within easy walking distance of the London Chess Centre shop on Warren Street, so you can do both in a short time.

The internet is cheaper, but when I visit both of these shops I like to buy something to support them - that's my excuse when I come out with a pile of stuff anyway! Laughing

I supported the shop on Baker Street last year so I might try Warren Street this year.
