Can anyone recommend a chess board and pieces?

£100 for the board only or is that for board and pieces?

Mmm, that may be tough finding one in the UK this time of year. I checked Chess Baron, Official Staunton, and Regency Chess (all in GB).
You might have some luck at Chess Bazaar in that range. They are not in England but they ship there.
Try chessbazar. They have a 30% off christmas sale going on and they ship to UK too. U would be able to find something nice around ur budget. Look for 12/14 inch wooden magnetic chess sets.

Thank you everyone. Having looked I have purchased a £20 wooden set for the moment and I think I will save up for a DGT Smart board. There is not a lot of choice at the moment at around £100 as everything is out of stock. My goal is to play in a club post covid and get my rating up to above 1500.

Hi Carrot,
100 pounds would certainly get you a nice quality set. I paid 38 euro for 55mm mahagony/mapple tournament board and 69 euro for Staunton sheesham/boxwood size 6 pieces (king height 95mm). All bought from a local store, so online it should be even cheaper.
When I'm back from work, I'll post a pic of it.

Nice board. I have got a cheap one for the moment and I will wait until the Xmas chaos is over to buy one.

Uhm yeah...me too. I was hanging out too long in the show your set thread, now I have one set of pieces and three boards.... Somehow one set of pieces and three boards doesn't feel in balance so I will look out for another set of pieces. Like you said, everywhere they're running out of stock so I'll wait till this crazy hype is over. Good thing I'm in no rush.

The London Chess Centre is my go to UK chess supplier, they have a choice of 5 sub £100 chess sets (board & pieces) and they are tournament sized 95 mm pieces and 50 mm squares. Sadly all out of stock at present, roll on the New Year and lets hope Brexit don't affect their re-stocking.

I see the London Chess Centre have only sold out of boards they have chessmen in stock. Their Classic Ebonised Chessmen and Traditional American Staunton Chessmen would be my go to choice for budget tournament sized wooden chess pieces.
@theendgame3 Where in the UK can you get a timber based budget tournament chess set at a more favourable price, any chance of a link?

I had a quick look at those websites and couldn't see the more favourable priced budget sets you refer to or we're not looking at like for like sets. I'm looking at wooden tournament sized pieces (95-105 mm Kings) and wooden tournament sized boards boards with 50-55 mm squares and a border.
Can you post a link?

That is a really nice board for just 38 euro.

You may want to consider a decent mouse pad-style roll up board (and spend the money you save on nicer pieces). such a board is far ceasier to transport than a tournament sized wooden one.

Don't think you are on to an amazing bargain at Chess Bazaar because they have a sale. Their boards are permanently discounted with large percentages off. There is no need to rush - there will be another sale next week.
Have you guys noticed the CB started to charge Taxes in their shopping carts? I would like to know when that started. Last time I bought the pieces from them it was 2021.

Their website has an update on 1/1/2022 that says they collect VAT to certain countries, including Canada. I'm guessing this happened to abide by Customs regulations and prevent 'surprise' customs import charges. I just ordered directly from CB with no extra charges, but I'm in the US. However, I will say that I was surprised with taxes being collected by Amazon when buying a CB item. (death and taxes, as they say)
