Can anyone tell me the best books to learn all the basic chess principles?

I have come to know that if a chess player is not well grounded in the basic chess principles they will easily reach a plateau and become unable to progress farther.

So I would like some recommendations that can help me get grounded in the chess principles without a coach.

Chess In A Nutshell - Fred Reinfeld. The year is 1954, it was a bestseller back there and for a good reason.

I 100% agree with the OP. Here is my list:

1. Play Winning Chess By Yasser Seirawan

2. Discovering Chess Openings by John Emms

3. Endgame Course by Bruce Padolfini

4. Weapons of Chess by Bruce Padolfini

All of these are from RussBell's list.

These days playing an engine (Stockfish) is probably the quickest way. With and without endgame tablebases for learning basic endgames.

If you want a fun games collection book well-suited for beginners that demonstrates lots of tactics, then I would recommend "Chess Beatdowns". Here's the link: Chess Beatdowns

Tiguent

"The game of chess" by Tarrasch . Must read classic imo
