I just got myself a nice set of handmade wooden Staunton chess pieces and now I am looking for a nice chess board. Problem, I'm trying to something handmade form the internet and returning will be a hazel. What would be the perfect board size (size per square) to have it neither too tight/crowded nor too wide open? I was thinking something around 1.8 to 2 square inch? Any comments or recommendations? Thank you!!!

Here are the specs of the pieces:

KING: HEIGHT: 3.7" (96 mm), BASE: 1.4" (36 mm)
QUEEN: HEIGHT: 3.2" (82 mm), BASE: 1.4" (36 mm)
BISHOP: HEIGHT: 2.8" (71 mm), BASE 1.3" (34 mm)
KNIGHT: HEIGHT:2.6" (66 mm), BASE:1.2" (32 mm)
ROOK: HEIGHT: 2.2" (56 mm), BASE:1.2" (32 mm)
PAWN: HEIGHT: 1.8" (46 mm), BASE: 1.0" (27 mm)

This is a subject that gets discussed weekly on this forum. A search will reveal discussions which may inform your decision.

Ultimately it becomes a personal decision based on whether or not you prefer an open board that easily allows you to view the ranks and files or you prefer a more confined space. Your decision might also have some basis in whether or not you have room on your desk (table) for the board and what ever else you like to have at the ready (clock, coffee cups etc).

The 1.33 multiplied by the king's base is commonly used. Also the ability to place four pawns in a square is also mentioned in discussions. By these measures I suspect a board with two inch squares would make you happy. But then again it is a personal decision.

Thanks for the answers. That helps to confirm that I am on the correct way with the roughly 1.8 to 2 inch squares. Better closer to 2 inch.

Go with 2 inch 50mm squares. I have a set with this size of base and it fits perfectly fine on 2 inch 50mm squares. Yes you can get away with 1.875 inch squares but in my opinion. It's a bit snug however it is playable.

Chess Set Sizing - Pieces vs Board...

For the overwhelming majority of chess sets (pieces) manufactured, and offered for sale by chess equipment retailers, the primary sizing criteria for the purchaser of the set and board is that of square size vs King base diameter...

A good rule of thumb is...

King base diameter = 0.75 * square size

or equivalently....

Square size = 1.33 * King base diameter

Any variation from these ratios, or the size of individual pieces and pawns, becomes a matter of personal preference...

Thank you everyone. Just ordered one with 2 inch squares.

The side of the square should measure 5 to 6 cm. Referring to 2.2
the side of a square should be at least twice the diameter of a
pawn’s base (it means four paws on one square).

@mjbn77 Here is my Popular Staunton 3.25" set with 1.4" base on a board with 2 inch squares. Just to give you a reference as to what it would look like.
