Anyone order this set?  Seems to be on "Backorder" forever.  I really like the one-piece knights.

I have looked at that set from CB in the past, just have never pulled the trigger because of back order. Finally buy now option is now available. Yesterday I pulled the trigger.

Let me know how you like it.  If you would've bought on "backorder", you could have gotten 25% discount.

I ordered that set about 2 weeks ago from ChessBazzar and it was backordered.  I did receive the backorder discount.  Yesterday I received an email from ChessBazaar saying that they had shipped the set (via Fedex), so I should be receiving it in less than a week.

Will be interested in your thoughts, Russ. The set looks nice and the price is good, but not sure about the "Chess Set in Stained Dyed" part of it.

I'll report back when I receive the set.

As for the "Stained Dyed" description.  I'm guessing this is their description for "Ebonized", which is boxwood stained black.  But again, this is just a guess.  I'll try to make a better assessment of this once I receive the set.

I made the purchase using code love20Cry. The detailing of the workmanship is very nice, especially compared to other sets of the same size. I say this because I actually own another set of this size category from CB and this one looks much nicer in pictures. The main thing that is noticeable about this set, to me is the knight. It's made out of one piece of wood just like Piatigorsky Reproduction. Cool

I received the GM Blitz set from ChessBazaar a few days ago.  It was packed very well for shipment.  Upon initial inspection, the quality of the set appears excellent.  The Black pieces are what would be described by most USA retailers as "ebonized" boxwood.  That is, boxwood stained black.  The stain appears to me to be executed as well as any other ebonized boxwood sets I have seen (I currently own four such sets).  I am very impressed by the set, especially considering the more than reasonable price I paid (I received the 25% "backorder" discount).  Even at ChessBazaar's normal price, I feel that the set would be reasonably priced.

RussBell:  How do the Knights look?

I have one of the Knights in front of me as I am typing this.  The Knights look excellent. (I have owned, over the years, at least 6 or 7 "ebonized" boxwood sets from House of Staunton and The Chess Store in the same price range from which to compare). The workmanship, carving is as good as, or better than any Knights I have seen at the price point.  In fact, I would go so far as to say they are nicer than I had expected, based on the photos on their website.  I am impressed.  My judgement at this point is that I think anyone would be very satisfied with this set, even at the normal price ($120USD).  Don't forget they have free world-wide shipping.  Suffice to say, I am happy!

RussBell.  How is the workmanship on the pieces in general?  Are the pictures on the CB website pretty accurate in terms of what you received?

I think I have pretty much described the quality of the set as excellent at its price point.  In fact I would say it compares favorably to sets that are much more expensive (which I also own).  The overall workmanship of all the pieces appears excellent to me.  To me, the pieces look better in person even than in the photos on the website.  I could not be happier with this set, for the price.

Russ, thank you for the review of this set. May have to pull the trigger (like I need another set ... happy.png ) with your comments on the quality, especially, as you say, at this price point.

Thank you for the very helpful information, RussBell.

I'll see what I can do.  Won't guarantee it though.

Pulled the trigger last night, should be here 2/28.

Now, however, I think I need another board. Can't remember what 2" boards I have and I am on the road for another two days ...

Oh,m the horrors!

cghori

Rsava: Just order the board when you get back.

Rsava

Yes, I know. It was a joke.

I have to wait a whole two days before I can see if I need to order a new board.

Thanks.
