Here are photos of the GM Blitz set I recently acquired from ChessBazaar. Understand the photos are not professionally done (particularly the lighting and exposure, which I did the best I could with, given my limited photography equipment and skill), and really don't do the set full justice. In a couple of the photos (with the pieces and board together) I had used a flash, which had the effect of slightly washing out (over exposing) the White pieces. In my opinion the pieces actually look better in person, than in some of the photos. The board pictured is a Drueke which I purchased in 1989. The overall dimensions are 23" x 23", with 2.25 inch squares. The patina is from being exposed to light for years.
Note that the rule of thumb for sizing the pieces to the chessboard is...
King base diameter / square size = 0.75 or equivalently....
Square size / King base diameter = 1.33
So a King base diameter for my Drueke board would ideally be around 0.75 * 2.25 = 1.6875 inches, which is very close to the base diameter of the GM Blitz King (1.625 in.) Bottom line - a square size of 2.25 inches would be appropriate for this particular set.
Bottom line - I think the GM Blitz set is a great set for the money....I'm very pleased with it.
FYI - the board pictured is my Drueke board purchased in 1989.
Wow, Russ. Many thanks for all the pics. Set looks great, can't wait for mine to come in.
I feel confident that you will enjoy your set.
Russ, thanks for the pictures. That does look like a great set and an outstanding bargain on price. The knights do seem to stand out favorably (I have a beautiful 1980 vintage Indian set in brownwood with knights that are..uh..unique), but I also like all the other pieces.
I wonder if they would consider a white lacquer set? That would cover up the wood grain, like the ebonizing does on the black pieces.
I think the set will look better on a 2.25" board.
