Hello

Other than chess.com''s great app, what are the best apps on the iStore if you want to improve your game, learn openings and check out  masters games with commentary?

Any advice would be appreciated !

Ziryab

Chess Quest, Chessimo, Tactic Trainer, Shredder, Chess-Wise Pro, Hiarcs, tChess Pro

Thanks - do you (or anyone) know much about this new chess pro app?

Ziryab

I've looked at it in the app store. It seems high priced relative to its likely value to me (I have lots of chess software). It might be of more value to someone else, however. As there is both a free version and a lite version, I would recommend trying it before you buy.

Do you mean the Chess pro with coach app? I have it and I like it. When playing or analyzing a game, you can play variations. This is something few other apps can. I also like the fact that coach suggestions are drawn on the chessboard. It also has the chess tiger engine, not the latest but still quite strong. For me as a beginner/intermediate player this is a very good app.

I respect Ziryab's opinion and am a fairly frequent visitor to his blog.  (and he is a much better chess player than I am!)  However I do disagree with his thoughts about the ChessPro app.  The one with the Chesstiger engine.  This is the best chess app I have.  And it is not even close.

The variations feature alone makes it the best app on the ipad for going through games.  Much better than a normal board or a PC!  Kind of the best of both worlds.  The fact that you can have the engine show only  whether or not the next move is bad or good is incredible for training!  I am going through Alekhine games and I have the engine running while I do it.  Red arrow=bad.  Blue arrow=Good.  When I see a red arrow.  I stop and try to figure it out!  And because of the settings in Chesspro I am getting NO OTHER information from the engine while I spend time with the position.  Then when I feel I have an answer I can check the engine's suggestions.  Plus it is just a darn fun engine to spar with and has lots of training levels.  And comes with a nice database of games to go through.

I have tried almost all the major chess software in the App store for my Ipad and all the Chess Apps for Droid on my phone.

ChessPro (the with by Christophe Theron) Is hands down the most useful and fun and best app.  Chessimo 2nd.  Shredder 3rd.    I have tried most all of them and these are the only 3 I have kept. (well I kept Hiarcs for nostalgia but never use it)  And I use ChessPro and Chessimo the most by a far margin.

On the Droid, the free Droidfish is awesome and constantly being upgraded.

I'll look at it. Thanks for the constructive criticism.

My initial impression may be wrong. However, I did try to express it as personal and not general. I have about $2000 worth of chess software, including ChessBase 11, Rybka 4, Hiarcs 12, and most of what Chess Informant has produced through Informant 113. I doubt that such abundance is the norm.

When I am going through master games, I tend to do so with the engine off. I turn on the engine only after I have done my own analysis. I use the same process going through my own games.

Nonetheless, your strong recommendation makes clear that the app merits a second look.

Chess pro with coach is sometimes on sale, so watch the app store.
