Chess Bazaar Staunton Series--A Photo Review

Last Friday my friend Phil and I pulled out my Chess Bazaar Staunton Series set and played with it on my RCMacMillan Memorial Knock-off board. Although listed at 3.8" for the King, it fit and played extremely well on the 2.5" squares. It's ebonized, one of Chess Bazaar's economy line. I bought it to take to chess club, but as I play mostly in close proximity to my bar and beer fridges, it hasn't seen much use. It's well-weighted, and a little funky. A lot of fun to play ten-minute with.

With the sweeping lines and absence of bases, the set reminds me of the Western versions of the Best Chessmen Ever pieces designed by Ifekali. Like the Stage 2 BCE pieces, these have collars.

The Chess Bazaar pieces...

The BCE Stage 2 pieces. The first image is of the Eastern version...

The design of the Queen is quite conventional from the collars up, to my eye a little out of place with the art deco feel of the other pieces...

Great pics and set Chuck, thanks for the pics. One of the best priced sets for under $100.  I ilke the simplistic designed pieces coupled with their nice sleek wide bases.  I especially like the Rook,Knight and Bishop designs. And the double collar pieces are quite  pleasing. The pieces are heavily weighted and have a nice heft to them. But the pawns are on the light side and could be heavier.

The Bishops capture the art deco look. Their miters are more bulbous than those of the BCE S2 Bishops. One of the white Bishops had developed a few cracks to its base. I'll be contacting Chess Bazaar. I've only had to replace one other piece from there sets, and the service was quite good.

The Knights are massive, true to Chess Bazaar proclivities. They remind me of Lardy, Liberty, and Spanish Knights. The broad, squared, flat heads are unique. These are real war horses...

cgrau

The Rooks are very close in design to the BCE S2 Rooks...

Finally, the Pawns. All in all, as Goodknightmike has said, this set is a great value at less than $100.

You're welcome Chuck, did you find the pawns in your set  a little on the light side?

I didn't notice them to be light, but I'll check them again.

Wow, that's funny, I am going to post my review of the pioneer chess set by Regency Chess (which I just got), and to my eye it's very similar. Will start a new thread for that but here's one pic:

Looks like they're supplied by the same carvers.

crau, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but it appears that one of your white bishops has a crack in it. Hopefully, you can get a replacement.

LOL, thanks, Lou. I noted the cracks in #6 above.

Sorry, I was admiring your pictures and missed it.

No problem at all, Lou. Good catch!

Guys I just want to plug Regency Chess, I got the above mentioned set from them (through amazon uk) but it didn't include extra queens. I mailed them and they'll be mailing them asap. What service. Already loved the set, now love the seller too. Highly recommended.

Impractical

A man needs funky every so often.  Thanks for the pics, chuck ☺
