Chess Bazaar The Rekjavik series Review

So about a month ago i ordered the Reykjavik series -3.7 inch king in sheesham and boxwood from the chess bazaar.

I wanted something of a "workhorse" type set I would not be afraid to use in a blitz setting. I chose chessbazaar as the retailer as I live in Singapore, and shipping from the US to here is a killer. Most other retailers could easily charge a little under the cost of the set for shipping, effectively doubling the price I had to pay.

I paid about US$64 for the set as Chessbazaar ships free internationally.

Overall, i was pleased with how the set looks. Pardon the poor photographs, they were taken with my smartphone.

Here is the set on a 2.25 inch squares.

And here's some photos of the pieces lined up:

At that price point, I thought the product was fantastic. I particularly liked how the sheesham pieces turned out even though the color isn't too uniform and might tick off others. I am also fond of the pawns with the bigger heads. Even with the bigger heads, it doesn't feel like they tip over easily.

However, the knights had some quality control issues, and were far from desirable.

Here's the same Boxwood knight, showing both sides of the horse's face:

As you can see, the left side of the knight's face is badly carved, its eye is badly positioned.

Although it is hard to show in photographs, the eyes are not carved at the same position with reference to its face, meaning that one eye is closer to the nose than the other.

At this point, I sent chessbazaar the photos and they were happy to send me a replacement knight for no charge.

Here's a picture of the better knight against the replacement knight:

In person, the difference in color of the knights is more apparent. I understand that since the knights are carved from different woods, the color may be off. However, the replacement knight is also larger than the original, making it look even weirder in play compared to the knight with one crooked eye.

Conclusion:

Much of this problem could be done away with if Chessbazaar has better quality control. Pieces like this shouldn't have made the cut as a product that one would sell others. They should be marked as "imperfect" pieces and sold at a lower price with the "imperfections" made known up front.

As someone who lives in Singapore, I am grateful that chessbazaar ships free internationally. However, with quality control like this, it is difficult for me to recommend to others who are looking to buy chess pieces.

Agreed and here is another important point: The pawns are too small compared with the original pieces. Will you ask for another replacement knight?

Although I wouldn't mind if the pawns were slightly bigger, they are sized nicely with 4 pawns just a little over 1 square on the 2.25 inch board. I also wouldn't ask for another replacement knight, since it is unlikely that they could send a knight that will go nicely with what i currently have.

Customers are advised to practice caution with Chessbazaar products. Their chess sets suffer from various defects such as hairline cracks, chips, discoloration and disproportionate pieces, e.g. the head of one knight could be substantially bigger or smaller than its pair. Besides, in order to save money and make bigger profit, they use low grade wood which looks cheap and is not durable. The weights of the pieces are also non-standard with one significantly heavier or lighter than others and most of the green felts are badly glued and come loose easily. I have uploaded lots of photos of defective and faulty pieces for fellow chess lovers’ attention. Also if you check your invoices from Chessbazaar which comes with your chess set from Fedex you will notice that CB puts fake and much lower prices than you really paid on the invoice in order to evade customs duty, in addition, they put ‘sample chess’ on the invoice to fool the customs  officers of the host country.

Hey you psychopath, what will you take to stop spamming the chess.com forum? You seem to be a frustrated fool to me....Calm down and play chess. We all know that you hate CB, maybe you're a competitor, but we won't be coming in your mud-slugging tricks and will continue to buy from them until unless they keep providing VFM products.

Please take your medication.

But thanks for pointing me to that nice set, it's currently on 50% off, considering to buy it.

I can see Chessbazaar is angry now and deperately trying to save itself as the truth about the quality of their poor chess sets and evasive customer service is revealed. No dodgy trader likes to be exposed and this also applies to Chessbazaar. I am happy to see that many customers have agreed with me regarding the junk quality of Chessbazaar chess sets. Chessbazaar puts its imperfect pieces on 50% sale which is unethical. As I said before should Chessbazaar continue foisting fake copies of their dodgy chess sets on consumers and sell them cracked, chipped and pieces with all faults, I will put all of their fabricated paper invoices together and email them along with a detailed report to the Tax Office and Customs Authorities in Europe and USA. You cannot sell a chess set for $200 to the customer and then put $10 in Indian currency on the invoice to fool the Tax Office. The dire cosequences are quite clear here.

Relax man! Why so frustrated? Had they robbed you or something? What do you think the customs officials are fools? Don't they know what is happening? If you don't know the facts, then better concentrate on what you do best, keep quiet and play chess. Let me tell you a little fact, I don't know about the world but US has no taxes for single piece items or item below $1000. You can retail a single parcel and can send it as a sample.

Based on the price of the item the customs levy duties a d that applies to any item over $40. Therefore, CB is guilty of pulling the wool over tax office and customs officials. It may be best to report this to the authorities and let them judge and decide if it is tax evasion or fraud or not.

So you are here too. I was just checking all the forum threads for your comments about chessbazaar and here you go...carry on with your chessbazaar beating
