So I don't know where else to look so hopefully someone here can help.  My husband brought this back from Africa when he was on deployment.  We are trying to get an idea on how much it is worth.  All we know is it is hand carved but don't know material or anything like that.  They said it was marble board but after seeing a corner chip off we now know it is not marble.

Hi,

No offense, but this set isn't worth much.  Hand-carved chess sets from 3rd world countries aren't exactly rare.  It's hard to tell from the picture, but I think it might be made out of some type of soapstone.

Even if it were made out of marble it wouldn't be worth much - just go out on eBay; that place is flooded with chess sets.

If you are trying to sell it, make sure you take good pictures that highlight the form of the pieces; the style of the pieces is what would catch someone's eye.

No offense taken I had no idea that is why I was asking. What is soapstone and how do I find out what it is made out of? And honestly what would you price it at if you were to sell it yourself?

You should also try looking at websites like wholesalechess.com, chessusa.com, USCF Sales, etc. to see how much they sell similar chess sets.

Keep in mind that the size of the board makes a big difference in price.

Soapstone is a common stone found all over the world.  Because it is so common it is not valuable.  It is soft for a stone and people have been carving it into various objects for all of human history.

To find out what your set is made from, I would suggest that you take some pieces of each color to a local rock shop and have them identify it.

As for price, I have no idea.  If you are auctioning it on eBay, I'd start out with a low reserve ~ $20.00 and then let people fight over it for a long time. You could get lucky.  If someone likes the pieces you could get top dollar.  If you advertise it long enough you will find someone who is interested.  The key is patience.

But first make sure you know what it is made from.  The rock shop can tell you how valuable the stone is.
