Chess books you would NOT recommend

During my initial years of chess playing, I made the mistake of buying a ton of books (just about anything with the word Chess on the front cover)from discount bookstores that I now regret. When I started mingling with stronger players at clubs,  I really knew that those books/authors are almost a recipe for disaster for a player starting out with the game.

This got me curious ... does anyone have a top three list of books they would deem worthy of the "UGH" factor?

How to Play Chess Like a Champion- Fred Reinfeld 1956

Attack and Counterattack in Chess- Fred Reinfeld 1954

Most Reinfeld books are fair to good, there is always something to be found that will improve your play.  These two have little to offer even for beginners.

My own top-three list

  • The Scandinavian by James Plaskett
  • Blunders and how to avoid them: Angus Dunnington
  • 2010 Chess Oddities by Alex Dunne

Oh, I feel the same.

Here are books you should not get

-The Game of Chess by Tarrasch. You can get the same stuff in much better modern books. Explanation is very boring and not helpful.

-Primer in Chess by Capablanca. If you have Chess Fundamentals, you won't really be needing it.

-A First Book of Morphy. Maybe some people may disagree but this book was a huge disappointment for me.
