Hey,

I'm a somewhat brand new chess player looking to get better going away for a nice summer vacation I want to pick up 1-2 chess books that I can read while im gone. Ofcouse they would have to be for an extremely low level chess player and I just don't know where to really start or what would be a good book that i'd be able to understnad. I was thinking some basic openings but i'm open to any suggestions.

Thanks for any help.

perhaps you can start with the books of Silman about ending.

and a books about tactics like the one of Dan Heisman back to basics tactics.

but not a book about opening.

I started out with The Idiot's Guide To Chess, a basic book by GM Patrick Wolff.

Check out Pandolfini's ultimate guide to chess. It's easy to read and understand. It's written like a conversation between a beginner student and teacher. Also check out Starting out: chess tactics and checkmates by Chris Ward (recommended by Dan Heisman on his web site even before his tactics book for beginners) I got mine at B&N. I'm going through both right now and really enjoy them. As far as Silman's endgame book it's pretty big and for beginners he recommends only read first two chapters until you get better, but they are helpful and easy to understand.

Common Sense in Chess by Dr Lasker

Chess Fundamentals, My Chess Career and Last Lectures by J R Capablanca

Practical Chess Endings by Chernev

1001 Checkmates by Fred Reinfeld

DO NOT IGNORE BASIC CHESS ENDINGS - learn all the Basic Checkmates (ie K+Q, K+R, K+2B vs a lone K) and start learning basic K+P and K+R endgames.

HAVE FUN!

Hey everyone,

I don't know if I will get a reply on that thread anymore, but I am considering buying some of these books and more as I am a fresh new chess player. I was wondering in which order I should read them, or at least with which to start and maybe follow up a couple. Here's my list :

Complete Idiots Guide Chess 3e - Patrick Wolff
The Tao of Chess : 200 Principles to Transform Your Game and Your Life - Peter Kurzdorfer
Back to Basics : Tactics - Dan Heisman
