Chess Clock

I am rather new to chess clocks.  I bought a DGT NA but it only displays hours and minutes except for option 1.  Why hours and minutes?.  I want minutes and seconds.  If a game is 3 hours, why not  show 180.00

I'm not sure, but it might be because the analogue clocks that were used before digital were in hours and minutes. Maybe they don't give the option because they had to standardize on one and chose H:MM. Maybe it was to minimize the number of figures a digital clock had to display.

NavyAC3

the free clock from chess.com for my phone is better than this DGT.

I have it set for 45 minutes game with 10 sec increment and it doesn't show seconds. Looks like I am returning it.

There is no need for 6 digits they only ever need 5 digits. 999 minutes 59 seconds. 999 minutes is over 16 hours... is there any need for a 17 hour game? If so... those people need a special clock not 99.999% of regular players.

I guarantee your DGT NA shows seconds. The screen literally tells you in the upper righthand corner if you're looking at hours and minutes or minutes and seconds.

Every chess school, club, tournament and governing body (national and international) make the current selection of dedicated chess clocks work for them. They all, to my knowledge, use the H:MM.SS format. You're the one that apparently needs a special clock.

Which exact model is it?

NavyAC3

DGT North America

NavyAC3

under at 43 minutes and still no seconds

hermanjohnell

It should show seconds.

NavyAC3

$43 and just 4 digits but I got 400,000 timing options... great engineering DGT

NavyAC3

BTW.... DGT should clearly say on the box, product descriptions and the manual that this is only a 4 digit display, but for those players who want accurate information, please buy our super duper 6-digit module for $20 more, that's just $10 more per digit, our best bargain.

swampmonger

The pictures on the website and box clearly show 4 digits and below is a screenshot of page 2 of the manual. Return the clock and move on. It clearly doesn't work for you

NavyAC3

It doesn't work for anyone. Returning to amazon in the AM.

I guess there is always one in a crowd who can't participate in an honest chess equipment review without throwing out the proverbial ad hominem.

Honest review? You asked a honest question at first which was answered. Then you didn't like the answer because you thought the clock should work the way you want it to even though it clearly doesn't. It works like every other chess clock on the market. Then you said it doesn't work the way everyone else's DGT NA works even though it does. Then you said DGT should make that clear on the website, box, and manual which they do. Then you said it doesn't work for anyone which it most definitely does.

If you're going to troll the forum you can't claim to be the victim when someone calls you on it.

I own three chess clock, a vintage Garde mechanical one, a DGT 2500 and a cheap chinese one. They all work well. I also have a couple of chess clock apps on my android smartphone and these work equally well. The chess.com clock app is excellent and as far as is all one need for casual play. It would work even for tournament play if it was just about functionality. It´s a bit of a mystery that dedicated digital chess clocks are so expensive when there are apps that work just as well that are downloadable for free.

Just heard back from the Manager of Sales at DGT. It does go to min/sec only after the 20 min mark. He did say it has been a source of many returns and they are considering a marketing adjustment. We had a very nice exchange of ideas AND we did it without a single personal attack.

Pretty smart. And pretty dumb...

[Removed: Offensive] ~W  but why not buy the DGT 2500 which ALWAYS shows seconds minutes and hours at all times? The display is pretty much identical to the "longbody" Chronos, which I'm definitely a fan of. Or if you want DGT electronic board score recording or "mixed mode" time controls (which I think has only been used once, and FIDE no longer uses them (increment and delay in the same game session), DGT 3000. Both of those would satisfy your requirements.

If you bought your DGT NA from amazon, just return it and get a 2500/3000.
