Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur : Similar books?

Sort:
Shivsky

I've found annotated games where a Master rips apart weak players  like myself MUCH more instructive and relevant to me  than games between two Masters, in the sense that I realize the full gravity of a mistake so much better when the opponent exploits it mercilessly. In addition, the mistakes the amateur makes are pretty similar to the ones I make in my own games.

My question is : Apart from Euwe's Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur, are there any other books that showcase games like this?

tarrasch

The Amateur's Mind presents games played by Silman against his pupils, and teaches you how to think about a plan, and also shows typical mistakes.

Crazychessplaya

There is a continuation of Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur, called The Road to Chess Mastery. Euwe and Meiden take the same approach, but to somewhat "advanced" openings. Take a look at the contents, it should look familiar:

?? Is this thread a joke? You are rated 2008.

Not a joke. chess.com ratings really don't mean much (correspondence chess, analysis board, access to opening explorers etc.). I'm rated about 1700 USCF which means I have a ton of stuff to learn. If I was a real expert (2000 Federation-rated), yes  ... then my thread would be a joke.

Shivsky

@crazychessplaya : Thanks for the tip. Didn't know Euwe wrote another book similar to that ... will look it up! :)

Well this is a Correspondence site and has no relation to OTB. So figure it out without casting a hook here. Find books, find coaches, find clubs, find databases, use your own brain to get better! Throwing out aspersions in a Correspondence site will no way help you play better OTB chess. Since there is a ratings difference of +300 points between ratings maybe there is a clue or a ruse?

You really have to work on your trolling.  :)

A retired psychiatrist, perhaps?

I wonder if Kononah is having a bad day.

As for a rating difference, its not difficult to understand by any stretch of a mind. I have many friends that seem to flounder in SD/30 or SD/60 tournaments because they spend to much time thinking. They gain a form of tunnel vision and their time seems to flitter away as they search for the best possible move on board. Granted they should prob play longer games if they desired a higher OTB rating. The resources available for CC is vast. They can fix any of their lacking opening knowledge with the opening explorers and be given days (not seconds/minutes) to find that elusive best move on board. Overall, i think its understandable that someone has a difference in playing strength between their SD/30 games and 1 move in 3 day games. Hopefully we all have better slow chess (grin)

His writing style's a bit dry IMO, but it is a very, very instructive book. Just right for your rating range Shivsky I expect. And even today I think anyone who seriously plays the Queen's Gambit should study all of the games featuring it in depth.

Shivsky

@nuclearturkey: Makes me even more excited to read it, given that I'm still looking for a nicely written classical introduction to the QGD. thanks!

@knightdreamer: Thanks for your comments about rating diffs. Yeah, even some well-meaning people will always have bad days.  Found it amusing that if somebody could go to the trouble of looking into my game history and  point out that my best win (vs. a 2200+ player) was tantamount to fraud, it might help their case if  they bothered to invest a second to figure out that this was a timeout win against a player whose account was later closed for cheating.

I am still in awe that a player of your rating is asking such a question in a general forum? Help me, I don't know how to use my own brain or the internet to seek chess knowledge?  So tell us what you are really asking for? Help, coaching, your rating is artifically inflated you don't know where to proceed? I am willing to help you in any way but please enunciate your real wants privately or forum-ally.

Shivsky

@Katonah: You need to stop being fixated on ratings on online servers ... you seem to be the only one surprised to see rating diffs between CC and OTB. A mere search of a zillion forum threads have players chiming in that this difference is normal. A USCF expert (Knightdreamer) voiced in on this thread to support the same.

If I had the Opening explorer, analysis board and unlimited time on my OTB games, I think I would have an OTB rating more agreeable to your sense of order in this world.

Oh, and my question in this thread was : "I wanted to read a book similar to CM vs. Chess Amateur. Could you recommend one" How this question is "beneath" my Correspondence chess rating really doesn't make any sense to me.

I really wish you find the happiness you are seeking by attacking people on forum threads, I really, really do.

One final note: Asking questions (however elementary) in a very good forum is not a crime ... I like to hear people's thoughts ... regardless of what they are rated.   *THAT* is what I really want. No jokes, no specious intentions.

It's not "beneath" -- Katonah is operating on false premises, and doing it rather aggressively too. His case is absurd. I think (hope) sensible readers recognize that.

KATONAH

Fixated on ratings, no. I just want to know if you are lazy or irresponsible? Why not do some research on your own instead of asking a lame question in the forums? Use your brain! Your righteous indignation is of no concern to me. I am not mad at you, hate you nor do I wish ill will. Having players use their brain is what chess is all about whether it is you or JG who is riding the wave but can't seem to accomodate your original posit ! How come no poster can answer your original premise? Is it above their level of knowledge or below them? With the internet at your finger tips you can't seem to find any resources to improve? I have offered my hand of help but you bit and others bite. If you want help ask me but obviously self discovery is a virtue unto itself!

Thanks for writing that.

I've been called lazy, irresponsible, potentially fraudulent (for a time-out win against a player who has been banned) and my question has been called lame. Wonder if I can get called anything else before the support staff actually intervenes?

KATONAH

I would be more then happy to answer your questions if you private message me instead of wasting space here where no one will or can answer. If you wish I will be more then accomodating to your quest. Hand extended 3 times now, your call!

Shivsky

Katonah: You're a sensible guy. Hear me out (for the last time:) The question I asked in this thread was a book recommendation.

Crazychessplaya and nuclearturkey recommended a sequel to Euwe's book called the Road to chess mastery, if you'll read the posts above.  I got my answer. You might think otherwise, but when people "suggest" a book that I could read, chances are this satisfies this whole "ask a question, get an answer" process.

I had no further questions, unless you seem to think I do within the context of this thread.

Sigmoid_Flexure

Who's ahead on the scorecards in this chessboxing match?

Silman's "The Amateur's Mind..." is a perfect place to start, Shivsky. Silman's putdowns of the thinking processes of even 1700-rated players that he plays against is Katonah-esque.
