Chess novels and short stories (fiction only)

I recently read Chess Story by Stefan Zweig and it's a brilliant book. It's a story of nazi prisoner and how chess can keep you both sane and one step from falling into madness.

Next book I'm reading is The Luzhin Defense by Vladimir Nabokov but I'll probably want more.

What other chess novels or short stories would you recommend? I'm asking for chess related fiction only.

In my library I have 4 novels with chess as a main theme; one is Zweig's, the others are: "The Death's Head Chess Club" by John Donoghue, "La Variante di Luneburg" by Paolo Maurensig and "Queen's Gambit" by Walter Tevis, made famous by the recent Netflix series.

Thanks. I've wathed the show Queen's Gambit (it's great) but I'll look for the other two books you suggested.

The novel by Walter Tevis is quite different from the TV show. Many people like it, I personally thought it was badly written - but then, my standards as a graduate in literature may be different. wink.png

I didn't know this section was in here. Happy that I decided to explore.

I'm Glenn and I'm a fiction author, have been for over twenty years. My son wanted me to learn to play chess here on chess.com, and I've been trying. Once I began learning however, I began envisioning characters who play, and scenes for the games. After discovering the Blog area, the idea for a psycho-thriller novel began building.

Now I'm on chapter 10, and I post the new chapters in the blog area, roughly once a week. If you are interested, have a gander. Chapter one begins here:
