Chess set recommendation

Hello everyone. I realize this question has probably been asked a million times around here but what the heck. I'll ask anyway as I would appreciate some ideas. It's always fun to discuss chess sets anyway.

I'm looking for a 4 inch king wooden chess set (a little bigger is okay too) for playing with when traveling around with the grandkids. Something that I don't care if it gets beat up. Approximately $200.00 is fine but I'm open to spending a bit more if worthwhile.

My plastic sets for this purpose are great but it would be nice to add a wooden set to the mix.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Chess Set Sizing - Pieces vs Board...

The primary sizing criteria for the set and board is that of square size vs King base diameter...
A good rule of thumb is...
King base diameter = 0.75 * square size
or equivalently....
Square size = 1.33 * King base diameter
Any variation from these ratios, or the size of individual pieces and pawns is a matter of personal preference...

Perhaps a matter of taste, but if you want something durable I like the classic Pinney pattern a lot.  The carvings may look simple but the pattern is very well designed for play and is subtly stylish.  It was a popular club set around mid-20th century.  https://www.houseofstaunton.com/the-liberty-series-chess-pieces-4-0-king.html

Hello and thanks to everyone for sharing your thoughts. I have an ACE Ultimate set in plastic and really like it. Another one of these sets in wood is a strong consideration. Particularly because, besides very much liking my plastic V3 set, I have talked with Shelby on the phone a couple times and have found him to be a good guy who will back up his products if there is a problem. Given the multitude of stories I read here about folks receiving defective sets and lousy customer service this is reassuring.

However, I posted this question because something different might be nice. @beachero - many thanks for your recommendation as this may be the “something different” to add a little variety I am looking for. Thanks again. I’m looking for a wooden set that I can bang around on with the grandkids and won’t mind if if gets beaten around.

The bottom line is sooner than later I’m quite certain I’ll end up buying both so what’s the difference?! happy.png

The only thing about 4" is that it really does require a larger than standard chess board or it is very crowded and difficult to play.

My favorite set that Is very playable, affordable, and durable is the Yugo (zagreb) 3-3/4" set from HouseOfChess.com. I love that the queens don't have the pointy crowns. Their monarch set is also very good and perfect for an affordable and good looking set in 3.75" and 4". Although I bought the 4" and returned it for the 3.75" because it was very crowded.

I really like the House of Staunton Player series in Indian Rosewood. 3.75". I bought this as a gift for a good friend and I will say I absolutely love HoS Indian Rosewood. Almost kept the set for myself. But there are a lot of great options in that ballpark. If this is a travel set a strong recommendation I have is to buy or use a pistol case for travel. I live in NYC and I put my pieces in the pistol case and slide that in a bookbag if I take the train to the chess club/event.

@KineticPawn Wait, I'm confused. Isn't that a 3.75" Nathaniel Cooke 1849 Jaques Repro in the pic? The 3.75 HOS Player series has completely different looking Rooks.

Is that the Dual Pistol Handgun Case? Or the Single size? The size looks perfect! Such a beautiful classy gift.

KineticPawn

@Pawnerai good eye.. that's is a SC 3.75" 1849 Distressed and Ebony.  The Player Series which I recommend was Indian Rosewood and regular Boxwood however I purchased that set as a gift to a friend so I used my 1849 to give a general idea of how a set would look like in the pistol case.

It's a dual pistol case and is probably the largest size that can fit in a book bag. Case Link

Just a quick thanks for all the suggestions. Great information provided by everyone.

Most of my plastic sets are 4" kings and the only wooden set I own (NOJ Minceta) is as well as I just like the bigger pieces.

I have found a 2.25" square board to be very comfortable to play on and haven't noticed it to be excessively crowded. That's just my personal observation however. Others may feel differently.

Thanks again to everyone and I will be looking over all the sets that have been recommended.
