Chess table from MillRoadWoodworking

Back in November 2021, I sent a message to MillRoadWoodworking on etsy, asking about having a chess table made by him, because I was really impressed with his work after browsing through his etsy shop and reviews.

The table got built around the beginning of January, and I have finally received it a few days ago. After a room cleanup, I was able to assemble it, which was very easy and took all of 5 minutes to attach the legs to the top.

I will use this table mostly to keep sets on display, study games and for general analysis. Maybe some play once in a while when people come over.

It looks even better in person than on pictures. It is absolutely beautiful and excellently made. The dimensions are 30W" x 34L" x 29"H, with 2" 1/4 playing squares. The table itself and dark squares are made of walnut. The outline around the board and the white squares are made from birds eye maple. The maple looks stunning in person.

Here are some pictures with my Noj Dubrovnik Minceta chess set set up on it.

This table is a great way to begin the year!

Very, very nice looking table.
I like the room on the sides for books, move list, etc.
Nice addition to a study/den, enjoy it!

Beautiful table and yes, the maple is incredible!

Looks both beautiful and functional. Congratulations.

Very nice!

That is a lovely table matched with a grand set. You’ll enjoy that investment for years and no doubt it will become a family heirloom. I like the matt finish and as Richard noted, the generous surrounds are functional too. It might be good to contact the maker and ask if they have any offcuts - it might be nice to have some walnut or maple coasters to ensure any drinks don’t mark the table. Thanks for taking time to post these pictures.👍

Coincidentally, I was just talking to another forum member about MillRoadWoodworking (Canada) a few days ago. His tables look phenomenal. Choice wood selection and excellent finishing. They each look like well thought out, one-off projects that he puts up for sale. As opposed to mass-produced items for a store. If I had room for another table in the house, I'd be all over it. Enjoy the chess table .... And the NOJ set!

PS. Did you make a NOJ posting about your Minceta set that I missed? Brown stain?

Wow! That looks nice! Congrats!

Thank you everyone for the replies!

I don't think I posted about this NOJ Minceta set specifically in the past, but I did post pictures of it in some threads at various points, so you may have seen it floating around the forum in someone else's thread.

I really enjoy the extra space on this table. Beyond being a chess table, it's going to make a great writing and reading table.

@Pawnerai That's right about MillRoadWoodworking. He does one-offs, but he's open to custom projects if you message him. His prices are very reasonable as well, even for custom work.

Here's some bonus pictures with my other Noj set:

I completely agree. This style table is so much more versatile than a Drueke table with the grooves. Or one of those fancy chess tables with the leather arm rests on the player edges. When not playing chess it can easily be a writing desk or laptop table. Or a jigsaw puzzle? Legos??  happy.png

How was the packaging? I imagine it must've been quite substantial to avoid damage. Some kind of wood crate? Cardboard, styrofoam, and a prayer?

NICE bonus pics. Love those metal bases. I don't think I've ever seen those metal bases on a Minceta,, I wonder if it's an option. Hmmmm.  happy.png

It was the best packaging you could ask for. It came in a fitted wooden shipping crate (so just a bit larger than the top, it was about 33" x 37" x 10"), with tons of bubble wrap around each part of the table. Even if you dropped the crate or threw it around, there was no way for anything to be damaged. It was shipped with UPS so it came pretty fast. He also included shipping in the price for me, but I'm not sure if it would be more expensive to the US. Definitely a great experience as far as shipping goes.

I will likely order from him again when I'm looking for a new chessboard, just to support his shop again. It's crazy to me that he is so unknown right now.

Wits-end

Awesome table and playing surface! I’m impressed with the shipping care as well. So many things are getting damaged nowadays due to inferior care and disregard, but this! Wow, you’re making us all a bit envious, and with good cause.  Thank you for sharing!

Incredible set up!!!!! Thanks for posting.

Cost?  And yes, plenty of space, way better than most chess tables.  Got room for not only the glasses but an extra bottle of booze too.

Including everything, it cost the equivalent of $900 USD or so. His regular chess tables usually go for a bit less (400-500 USD, example here), but the outline around the board and the choice of birds eye maple added to the price of mine. It was well worth it for me, since I figured I'm going to be using this table for the rest of my life.

This table is dynamite !  I was looking at chessgameshop in Slovenia at their Taj tables (beech and walnut), but this is better (more expensive too).  Wider than deep, and the choice of wood is great.

That is some great bird's eye maple. Love how the grain is horizontal, I prefer it that way. Par excellence!
