Hello guys,

Thinking of purchasing this software, (Chess Tutor step 2 and 3 (Shredder)

anybody familiar with it? Opinions and suggestions?

Thank you

Martin_Stahl

Looks that is just the product from http://en.chesstutor.eu

I can't say anything about the software but it is based on the  Step Method (Stappenmethode), which seems to get good reviews on the forums. I know the lower steps are geared towards lower rated players.

You can read more about the book version on their site:

Seems a little pricey... not sure...

A less expensive option and has been around for years, might be TASC Chess Tutorial.  I cannot say for sure if this offers the same material, but I think it might be something worth looking into.

Here is a link for purchase if interested (assuming you are in the USA):

From the the little looking I did it appears the product might be a newer version of the TASC software.

Differences from TASC:

http://en.chesstutor.eu/difference-tasc-tutor.html

I have used chess tutor 1 to teach my two kids the basics of chess, and i've used chess tutor 2 myself.

It has many excercises for every chapter and also many "games" to understand and to practice the interactions of the pieces on the board.

I feel that it is a very structured -self study- way to learn chess  and to understand the concepts through many many excersises. The program also has a chess engine and when you make a wrong move, the engine responds, to show you why the move was wrong. I want to buy step 3 when i have some time. The program is time consuming and i don't think that 20 euros are too much, for a couple (or more) of months of structured training. (just my opinion)

Yeah. This is may be a better investment. In fact, you can go a long ways on this site without even getting a membership. But, at some point, you will find there are tons more available if you do.

Hi. Has anyone else found there are some glitches in Chess Tutor step 3. For instance is it really possible to mate with Bishop and Queen giving mate with the Bishop not the Queen? And in the same chapter "Mobility", the problem with King and Pawn vs Queen, when you look for a solution it tells you how to trap a Knight with a Queen. These seem to be problems with the otherwise excellent software. Then again, may be I'm just stupid.

Yes I've found glitches across the versions: the mini-games that use the engine all hang for me.  The program itself hangs randomly.    Which is too bad, the content is good.

It is like "Stappenmethode". I think Stappenmethode is better. There are Books and Software.

Looks like it works on my older windows 7 system, the hangs were on windows 10

The benefit of the "Stappenmethode" is that there are a ton of exercises,  specially curated and composed for each individual level, with the appropriate difficulty, that ramp up gradually in difficulty from step to step.    The problems very often offer a choice that requires looking at opponent follow-up moves in order to properly select the correct move.    The puzzles on chess.com and other sites are only sorted by "rating".   You can certainly learn from them, but I think sticking with the steps method will mean a higher general quality of problem to solve.
