Chessbase 16 installed trovi virus

Update: Seems like I got the virus via a chrome extension the culprit colorpick eye dropper. It's still confusing as to why it showed up only after I installed chessbase since I had that extension for months now. Anyhow, for anyone else reading this, becareful with Chrome extensions they are full of viruses.

Has anyone gotten the Trovi browser redirect virus after installing chessbase 16? My browser was working just fine right until I installed chessbase. It's the only download I performed and it was working fine literally until I installed chessbase.

I still can't believe a company as big as chessbase would add a virus on customers computers. From my research Trovi.com pays companies to bundle the browser redirect with their products, so that it gets installed in customers machines. I still want to give Chessbase the benefit of the doubt but I cannot understand how chrome was working fine ever since I got it, literally right until I installed chessbase

Did you install a legitimate copy or a pirated copy?

Brand new version from Amazon sold by Chess Central here's the link

Hmmmm...Id be suspicious since it was not bought directly from chessbase.  I have used their products for years and never had any issues with them.  But i always buy directly from chessbase.

I actually did not notice it wasn't from chessbase until after I bought it. I thought it was fine since ChessCentral seemed to be a reputable company and it was on Amazon afterall.

Oh man, at one time Chess.com was even foisting that Trovi cr@p in one of their "free" downloads. I think it was before V3...

Yea I just did reserach based on your comment. It seems like this is a problem that has happened due to the ads on the site

@OP - Was the Chessbase 16 install from an official looking install DVD? I'd primarily suspect the "ChessCentral's Chess King Flash Drive." Did you run anything from the flash drive?

I seem to remember reading a month or two ago that some people had received counterfeit hard drives from Amazon. I guess you can't take anything for granted anymore...

Although, I wouldn't be totally shocked if the Trovi virus actually came from the Chessbase install media. It's my subjective impression that since Frederic Friedel retired, Chessbase has been involved in some questionable practices, such as the Fat Fritz fiasco, and allegedly violating the Stockfish GPL.

Yes, the package, case, CD, everything looks official. And yea I also suspected the drive as well. I did insert the drive but did not run any file. That's troubling to hear about the Amazon drives and yea, I was concerned because of the Stockfish fiasco as well

As far as I can tell, I managed to remove the virus by running a system restore point, malwarebytes, hitmanpro and resetting chrome settings. Nasty little virus didn't want to go away until the last step.

If it were me, I'd have some fun trying to determine whether the Trovi stuff was hiding in the Chessbase media or the ChessCentral flash drive. I'd probably try running some kind of Live bootable antivirus program so that the media wasn't actually mounted.
