Chessbase Questions

Hi.  I'm still using good ol' Fritz 8.  Can someone tell me if I bought something like Mega Database or Big Database 2010, 2009, etc. if it would work in Fritz 8?  Do those DVDs simply contain the .cbh files or what?  Would I have to buy Chessbase 10 in order to use one of the DB DVDs?

Thanks.

No.  Fritz 8 can handle PGN format as well as .cbh files.  It would be good if you could tell us what format the databases you intent to buy are in.   I can only assume the databases are in PGN format, but if they are, Fritz 8 will read them fine.

They are Chessbase DVDs, I'm sure they are .cbh files which Fritz reads.  However, I've never purchased Chessbase itself or any of the DB DVDs so I'm unfamiliar with what is required.

ChessBase products are in their proprietary format, .cbh, which all their programs can read. Yes, Fritz 8 can read mega- and big database files. The database program has features lacking in the playing program. These features enable searching and organizing the data. But for basic uses, anything after Fritz 7 (maybe 6--I'm less familiar with it, so cannot say) will work.
