ChessBazaar's 1950's Soviet Latvian Set in Antiqued Boxwood

Here's some pics of a fabulous set I recently purchased from ChessBazaar, their 1950's Soviet Latvian Set in Antiqued and Ebonised boxwood. Kings measure 4.1" in height. My pictures don't do justice to the antiqued boxwood pieces as it was difficult to capture their true beauty. A nice playing set as well as a collectible set. I also have their previous version in natural boxwood and ebonised. I love this set so  much I just had to have both versions. I know, I have a serious addiction collecting sets. Set is shown on my chess table with 2.5" squares. I've provided a link to this fabulous set:

Mike, I am now considering buying this antiqued version.  I already own their natural boxwood version.  I especially like the look of the pieces and their coloring on a wood board.

And yes, this set does play very well.  In my opinion, Chess Bazaar has done a great job with this set.

Ron, the antiqued boxwood and ebonised pieces have a striking board presence, a lovely sight to behold.  Agreed, it plays so well too! Go ahead and pull the trigger on this beauty.

Mike's absolutely spot on regarding this set. He recommended this set to me a few weeks ago and I can tell you it's simply stunning!! My pieces came in absolutely flawless condition, with not a mark on them and the patina is superb.....Highly recommended!!

-Thanks Mark, Indeed a stunning set. One has to see the antiqued boxwood pieces in person to really appreciate their beauty.

First, I would like to say "STOP IT!". My family will once again go without food because I read the comments and drooled over the pics. Thank you SOOOOOOO MUUUUUUUCH!

Second, and much more important - I tried to order the set with the FEAST30 discount since it is above $199 ($199.99). It would not work, so I got on chat and asked why. Apparently since it is backordered I would need to use the Backorder25 code, I said I wanted the 30% code since it was an extra $10 off. The rep said it did not apply to backordered items and I asked where it said that. If it was listed somewhere I would accept it and move on but I could find it no where.

They finally told me to send an email with my info and how I would pay for it and they would send me an invoice.

I sent an email and within 30 minutes I had the invoice in PayPal to pay for my set with the FEAST30 discount applied. Now to wait for my set .... Hopefully not too long but I also want them to take the time to make it great.

My Botvinnik set ,also recommended to me by Mike (a knowledgeable and friendly fellow) was also back ordered. It only took about 2 weeks. With CB you do have a good chance of getting some pieces that are slightly marked up.I felt lucky that my Lat set was flawless and did not expect it to come out so absolutely perfect.......I'd posted (around the holidays) about some serious issues I was having with CB,but after dealing with them for this much time I've come to realize they "do" try to ultimately please their customers......I've bought a total of 10 sets of pieces from them (I'm pretty much done) a board and a nice storage leatherette box.Overall I feel they offer the best overall value, but sometimes it's a hassle....No biggie in the long run. -happy.png

Hey Rsava, I feel you pain and I love it! Thanks for you nice comments. Sorry you had a hassle with CB getting your 30% discount, but its well worth it as you will add a fantastic set to your collection. The antiqued boxwood finish is amazing. Please let me know when your sets arrives and any comments you have about it once you see it in the flesh. My pics and DVDs don't do the finish justice

Hey Mark, I bet the ChessBzaar Botvinnik Flohr set would also look fanatstic in the antiqued boxwood finish.

No doubt! I wish CB would start to do some of the NOJ sets,at their more reasonable prices. My dilemma is,i cannot stop eyeballing all that is out there.....and....Chess pieces/sets/clocks/books are SO collectible!! I definitely inherited my father's collecting genes to my wife's dismay.....Don't even get me started on my acoustic guitars. -happy.png Once retirement comes around, you won't "ever" see me bored!!

Mark, you have a full blown addiction with chess sets, clocks and books. Welcome to the club! But what about nice wood boards?  Your addiction is compounded with acoustic guitars...oy vey!

That's good Mark, your addiction has come full circle with the addition of boards

I don't want to hijack this wonderful thread, but i bought an INSA Clock yesterday. Now looking at my next set or "3" and a  CB luxury board.....Down the road, since divorce court would be my next stop.....Yuk!

Also,Mike there's a pretty big electric train show at the N.J. Exhibit Center)Edison) coming in the next week or so.....Thought you might be interested......Now,back to the original thread.-happy.png

If I look at pictures in this thread Chessbazaar changed their knight to something way more ugly. The belly is way rounder and also the back of the knight has weird alignment.
