Chessboard for Noj walnut/maple pieces

What would be a good material for a wooden chessboard if the chessmen are made of walnut and maple? I like the traditional walnut and maple chessboards, but I am afraid there would not be enough contrast in this case.

I will soon be receiving a set of Noj BCE stage 1 chessmen in natural walnut and maple and I am especially interested in what other Noj owners are using for their walnut chessmen.

I own 2 Noj sets in Walnut and Maple, Dubrovnik II and BCE stage 2 with Stainless Steel bases.

I agree about finding a board where there is good contrast between the Black pieces and the dark squares.

With that though, there are some Walnut and Maple boards that are almost perfect with the Walnut sets.

For the BCE I suggest a 2.25" square sized board as that set plays a bit bigger than the Dubrovnik set.

I have a Drueke 2.25" board that has the squares not as dark and it's great.

I also use a standard Green and Buff vinyl board and that looks and works great at tournaments.

I do also use a leather roll up board where the dark squares are a darker Green and the leather of the light squares is a lighter tan.  That is actually my favorite set-up.

Those Summerville chess boards are great looking and classy boards. I would trade both my 1960's Druke boards for one of them.

Thanks LuftWaffles! I'd love a Monk, but it's way too expensive for me at this moment, the shipping to Finland would add $180 to the price and I'd probably have to pay 24% VAT at the customs as well, so $800 in total!

Eyechess, thanks also for your advice. Which walnut boards tend to work well with walnut chessmen?

I've actually been looking at some really minimalist boards, like this one from the Noj site:

It's made by German manufacturer Ulbrich in maple. I think it would look good with the walnut BCE, but I'm not overly fond of black for the dark squares.

I could get a similar Italian board in mahogany and maple from scacco.it. But their image of the board is really bad, so I'm not going to post it here.

Then there's this:

Also by Ulbrich, I like the materials used (rüsterwurzel, whatever that is, and birds eye maple), but not so much the design frame.

Rechapados-Ferrer makes a lot of nice boards:

Standard Walnut. I like the light frame on this one.

Deluxe Walnut.

Deluxe Walnut "Diagonal". This one is very nice IMO.

Deluxe Rosewood.

Santos Palisander.

Montgoy Palisander. This is perhaps my current favorite.

As you can see, I'm having a difficult time deciding. All advice and insights are greatly appreciated.

In the end I went with ifekali's new BCE bordeaux red magnetic board. It fits the walnut BCE chessmen perfectly. I posted a picture of this combo in post #17 in the following thread:

Can we revive this thread...what board would you choose to go with a Noj maple and walnut set?

My thoughts have gone in three directions:

1) lighter dark squares to contrast with the walnut - eg maple and cherry, sapele or mahogany

2) black / very dark dark squares to contrast the relatively light walnut dark pieces

3) Maple and walnut board to match the pieces, because it will look good and walnut pieces on walnut squares isn't really a problem the way ebonised pieces on black squares is

Can anyone give feedback and/or pics to help?

I find that my 1941 Soviet set in Maple/Walnut works well with just about everything, including boards in the same woods (I posted pictures of that set on my chess table and both are maple/walnut).

Although I have to say I do prefer using this set on my JLP board, this one I think, which is also maple/walnut: https://www.chesshouse.com/collections/jlp-hardwood-chess-boards/products/raised-edge-style-21-hardwood-players-chessboard-2-25-squares-jlp-usa
