chessnut move

They mentioned that the wooden pieces are 3D printed prototypes with the "robot" bases spray painted with metallic paint. But the plastic pieces look like the "robot" bases are integrated right into the chess pieces.

I wonder if they are going to offer "robot" bases for the DIY crowd that want to make their own chess pieces for the Chesstnut Move?

Might return the Evo I bought a week ago if it's under $1k and not too noisy. I'm fascinated with how the pieces move and would love to see someone do a breakdown of the machine itself.

I have an EVO as well and I love it. Not sure the Move will do all the training and analysis that the EVO does, though...I think it launches on 12/26.

I like the idea of the Move but I have one question that will likely decide if I will buy it or not -

Does my clock start when the moving piece FINISHES moving or does my clock start the second the piece STARTS to move.

My guess is that my clock will start when the piece starts its move which will be disappointing. That will waste so much of my time.

I would love to have a self moving board that moves quick enough to play rapid, or even blitz games.

I really want to support chessnut on chessnut move , So put my order in for a wooden set , I really hope the flaws are ironed out before shipping ,

The price for what you get looks like a great deal .

Guess it's a risk you take , A self moving board is really a cool thing , wink

I have ordered the wooden set. It will become my 3. board from chessnut after Evo and Go. And I like them all!

A couple of things - Every version 1.0 of stuff I've bought has (some sooner than others) come out with a Version 1.0+. The question is, how will ChessNut treat those early buyers?

Also, with the new USA administration's Tariff plans. Anything from China could become very expensive very quickly.

In a YouTube review, one streamer commented on the "motor" at the base of each piece - though that might have been a guess on his part. His comment pointed to a motor needing power and a battery. And that's 32 batteries per set. If each piece has a motor, maybe its power source can be charged via a USB port. And the small motor and "time-at-work" means a charge could last a long time. But the motion could be done with magnets. The bottom line is, we don't know.

Some comments above rate this board based on their ability to play able-bodied and give it a "Meh". But consider this - I have a friend who will spend his life in a wheelchair. He has minimum movement with his hand. When he plays in a tournament, using a finger, he points to a piece and a square on an app, on his small phone, on the table, or balanced on his knee. I make the move on the board and record the move. I don't know how he practices at home but this set would be great for him, especially if it responds to vocal move directions.

In a tournament, someone will still have to record the moves (unless the director lets the App do that), but if using this board, moving the piece by pointing on the (chess.com or LiChess) app, no one has to move the piece. Even if that were not allowed, the board would be great for practice.

Last, if you haven't seen Steve Martin's Lonely Guy, it's worth the rental or buy on an eStore - just for the very short chess-playing scene.

It's the risk you take  cougarmeat Chessnut as i know, Are not into shafting customers , Only thing I had in the past from them is software not working for mac & taking a while to get back to me on emails . it's a small company based in HK / in this case gave me a refund of $50 due to being late with updated on mac , As for the chessnut move yes it's a risk but you do get a big discount & if works as it says ,

I for one will be very happy a bit like playing chess with Hal in 2001 . Yet it's now 2025 . wink

It was/is offered at a pretty healthy discount. My finger was hovering over the Buy button. And I know - someone has to take the leap. It's like in XC Skiing - the first person breaks (tracks out) the trail for the other skiers. They will have a happier place in whatever is their "beyond". But I also noticed big discounts on the other ChessNut products heading into the holiday season.

In yesteryear, before I retired, there wouldn't be a hesitation. Now I have to be more ... cautious. The biggest concern is all this Tariff (items 40% more expensive) talk.

Time will tell. Watching it move on the video is pretty cool. With voice control and verbal move reporting, you could have fun with Blindfold chess against a bot. happy

At the introductory offer, it's worth every penny. But I need to know more about the overhead in the piece moving mechanism (separate motor or magnets), and its performance "out of the lab". That won't happen until someone buys it. I've done my duty as a "leading-edge" buyer for most of my professional life. It's time to pass the baton to younger, income-gathering, youth.

Anyone else here pre-ordered theirs already?

Yes, on day 1 wink.png. Chessnut makes really good products; I'm interested to see how it compares to the GoChess (kickstarter). Both should release around the same time.

Right on  L1ghtst0rm + I really hope it works out design wise / price wise looks like a great deal ! wink

When starts your delivery of the board? They told me, that my board will arrive at Germany end of may.

Remember, we’d like to know how the pieces are powered for movement - like do they each need a battery for a motor. How loud are they - would the movement be disturbing in a tournament? How long (in seconds) does it take for a move - like a pawn exchange, or knight move?

A site, streamable.com, gives you a free area to upload videos. I got that from Chess.com so I could show them some misbehavior where the game analysis was showing White’s moves as Black. It’s a useful site for uploading a simple video you want to share with others.

This is going to be a large plastic board with a 4in tall king that has a 1.5in base.

The board is going to be 2ft wide.

This seems to be a very interesting design, and conceptually different from any other previously offered from any company. I'm speculating it's a mixture of technologies from 'micro mouse races' and 'drone shows'.

Things noted/questions so far:

  • Each piece has its own battery ... so 35 batteries total.
  • Since each piece is charged by induction, how many charging pads are there?
  • The base of all pieces are the same size.
  • The base of each piece has its own motor(s) and circuit.
  • Do all pieces always stay on, or does each piece need to be turned on/off?
  • Does each square have induction charging?
  • If any battery runs low, can the pieces be charged during play, or must we stop play to charge?
  • Will this set include spare bases (1 or 2) which can be used to resolve any piece failures?

Some of the pieces remind me of the original design dubbed BCE for Best Chessmen Ever made by Noj. Here is the BCE Stage 1 Western design:

Yep ... Chessnutech certainly aren't known for creating new designs of chess pieces. Like, I'm sure I bought my Chessnut Air pieces before Chessnutech even existed. However, this 'nu tech' robotic design is completely different from any other attempts at self moving pieces. Seems to be a 'micro mouse race' sized 'Roomba' with multi 'drone show' coordination. Time will tell if this concept works.

Chessnut air must more functions to its app.

@#23 to be fair for your opponent the clock hast to start as soon he makes his move. So basically just before the pieces start to move. It’s like that with all the other self moving boards. With the Square Off Boards you are able to play against other Square Off users and then the clock starts after the move is completed. Blitz games are not really enjoyable but everything from 15 minutes is possible.
