ChessUp initial thoughts

Out of all the e-Boards coming out it seems to have the most advanced tech but because of that the price is high ($380 at pre order). So if you don't need ai assistance which is their selling point then i'm not sure if you can justify paying so much for something you won't use.

Thanks and good point. I'm not great at all at chess and still learning. I'm not sure though how much benefit it will be over other resources I can learn off. Surely I'd learn just as much by playing more chess and analysis of games? I'm really close to buying the DGT Pegasus but then seen the ChessUp. Tha Pegasus looks good?
Have you looked at the chessnut air? It just started getting delivered. Also the millenium e-ONE also started deliveries this month so you might want to wait until you see reviews on those 2 before you get the pegasus. I think in the coming days/weeks we'll have reviews on these so you can make a better decision.

Ah yes I've just seen the Chessnut air. I don't know when I'll get it delivered here in England? Am I right in thinking it does the near enough the same as the Pegasus?

This makes me wary of the product (from the product page):
We have noted that recently Chess.com will not release interactive API that allows game moves because of security issues. However, we are using a JS control to simulate mouse clicks to enable our chessboard to control pieces' movements on Chess.com,
We promise to improve the online game experience and keep in touch with Chess.com to reach an official partnership and integration under official technical support. For the time being, there is no official partnership have been reached with Chess.com yet.
Have you looked at the videos in this channel? Lots of videos here to help you. He said he's getting the millenium eONE and the chessnut air so he'll be reviewing both

Yeh seen that one. I've just read some of the comments on the Kickstarter Chessnut page and there's Bluetooth connection issues and the usual bugs by the looks of things.

I think that was an issue on the user's part if not mistaken. I am in your same situation I am also new to chess and really want to buy a board and have been waiting for like 2 months for the millenium eONE and chessnut air to launch so I can see them. From what i'm reading online it looks like the chessnut air is good and I think i will end up buying it. I'm just waiting for a full review first so hopefully within a week as more people get the board and post videos online.
It honestly seems like something that's not worth the money and even if it was cheaper (say $20) I wouldn't want it. I am capable of running analysis on a computer. People who play more OTB would like it more.

Here's my experience with ChessUp:
1.) The app is not yet complete in terms of features. 2.) Sometimes the app becomes unresponsive, it crashes, etc. 3.) No 3rd party App support for now. Which means you can't use ChessUp to connect to Fritz or Chessbase.
If you want to have an eBoard that you want more support from 3rd party apps and if you want to connect to Fritz or Chessbase software in Windows then ChessUp is not the right choice for now.

I have done multiple firmware upgrades and Android and board reboots and calibrations, but the thing is simply unreliable. The board sometimes does not pick up your moves, the app sometimes does not pick up opponent moves on LiChess, the App gets sometimes unresponsive, the resign does not work. A very nice attempt, but simply too buggy at this time (Dec 2022).

I agree with this one. This is also my experience with Android. Any IOS users that can share their experience here?
Looks like the software development is slow -- buggy at this time (Dec. 2022). Don't get carried away by the video presentations.
If you want connectivity with Chessbase or Fritz then look for other eBoard brands that has Windows driver available already (e.g. DGT Pegasus, Square Off Pro, E-one, Certabo, etc.).

I'm having the same experience.

I am using mine on IOS and it works wonderfully. I had a few problems initially but they were minor and did not detract from my playing experience. I wrote my review of it in another thread. I have been using mine almost daily and I am very happy with my purchase.

Today, 16-Dec-2022, I downloaded the latest version of ChessUp Android app. Installed the latest firmware on the eBoard. The app or the firmware might be buggy. I move a piece and on the app it registered sa different final destination square of the moved piece but I never placed the piece on that square.

If you watch reviews on YouTube these issues are not mentioned. That's why those who plan to buy an eboard must first check the user-feedback in this forum.

Saw an ad for this product on another social media site. There are lots of criticisms posted of the inefficient way that it teaches the elementary checkmate of rook and king vs. lone king.
Here's a screen shot.
The advice given is not how I teach this, nor how you'll find it taught in any of the exceptional books for novices written by chess professionals, such as Jose Capablanca, Chess Fundamentals; or Bruce Pandolfini, Pandolfini's Endgame Course. The US Chess Federation produced a pamphlet 20 years ago called "Roundup at the KR Corral" that teaches the easiest and largely efficient method of making a box (corral) even smaller. Chessup offers a much more tiresome method.
.
From the position in the screenshot (the rook was on b2), Rf2 leads to mate in ten. It instantly reduces the size of the corral to 12 squares--far better than a check driving the king back one rank and a corral of 36 squares.
.
Based on the ad I saw, Chessup will stifle your development as a chess player. If that's your intent, the $300+ could be spent on booze which you consume to excess.

ChessUp Android app was rebuilt and re-released in May 2023. It is stable and very robust for online play and other features as well. If you have any remaining issues we have a support forum, email support, and even phone support (Mon-Fri, USA CDT).
Chess.com play is testing now and expected release is October 2023.
