I tried using a Search Engine for your quesion and as usual got a ton of BS hits totally unrelated. BUT if you have more patience than I do maybe you can answer your own question using a search engine. GOOD LUCK!

OCR software may be able to help you, but probably the time spent working with that means you wouldn't save time.
Seeler have you found a suitable way to do this yet? I am looking for the exact same tool. The only thing I found similar was an app called "chess book study," but it appears to only be available for android.
I am working sporadically on the chess diagram recognition problem in my spare time. Various parts of the process have been solved already in other contexts - e.g. there is an app that captures and recognizes Sudoku puzzles (http://sudokugrab.blogspot.co.uk/2009/07/how-does-it-all-work.html) with a high degree of reliability. Once I have found reliable algorithms for chess, I would like to implement this as an app, allowing you to grab diagrams from books with the camera. Import from pdf is another possibility.
Sorry for the late reply on an old thread.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by a PDF-format. Are you trying to convert game notation text, or a board position diagram?
Fred Mellender has written a program that captures a chessboard image/position and converts it to PGN or FEN. (https://sites.google.com/site/fredm/)
Otherwise, if you use Adobe Reader (later versions) you should be able to highlight the PGN text, copy and paste into a text editor and save as a PGN file for pasting into your UCI. This would not work if the PDF file was a graphics or photo image and not PDF text in which case you would either have to struggle with an OCR converter or just manually enter the moves from the annotation listing.
I use Caliber, the free ebook library manegment program. I convert the pdf to epub format and use the built in book editor to copy and paste the pgn text into Penguin pgn editor. Not as cumbersome as it sound, goes quick once you get the hang of it. You then convert to cbh with chessbase.
this suck there is no simple way to convert a chess book that is in pdf formate with figurine into a pgn formate chess book
Hello!
Here is the site www.altoconvertpngtopdf.com, maybe it will help you with the problem, just at the bottom of the page there are links to other products where you can find more opportunities for PDF files
I used a demo screen reader/OCR that works on a screen capture, where you capture a portion of your screen and it'll ORC it.
It uses screen captures; it might actually be useful to you in this specific case. I can't remember the program name, it was part of an accessibility package (it's OCR is tuned to the screen resolution). So, maybe search accessibility programs.
Viktor Moskalenko defensa francesa
l. Sveshnikov E. - Moskalenko V.
URS-ch Norilsk, 1 987
1.- The way to do it and learn is to have the pdf of the file, (example, "Viktor Moskalenko French defense") to transform into pgn or cbh.
2.- Have the databases of the pdf document (example "Viktor Moskalenko French defense" in pgn or cbh)
In the internet there are already games in pgn, it is a question of looking for them, they can be found together or loose, they can be searched in chessgames is a database where all the tournament are saved, and you can see other sites of chessbases.
3.- To have an editor of pgn or the chessbase to realize the edition of the pdf to pgn or cbh etc.
open the pdf, select the example, of the game example
Viktor Moskalenko French defense
l. Sveshnikov E. - Moskalenko V.
URS-ch Norilsk, 1 987
You will find text parts and plays
the text of the pdf is copied, part by part, incorporating in the corresponding plays in the pgn editor in the corresponding pgn file, there will be some parts that we will incorporate as a new variable.
so the pgn or cbh is being built
It's the easiest thing I've done
pdf copy text paste in the pgn
if you need more help send me a message

copy paste chess Figurines from pdf files into a chess format (pgn, chessbase)
I sometimes use chess games, which is only available in pdf-format and regularly would find it useful, to have it in a chess format (pgn or chessbase-file). Sometimes there are pdf files from which it's not possible to do that. Is there a way/tools to convert the file into a proper format. Please contact me on the forum or via my email: darafshdar.ahmad@Gmail.com Many thanks.
A poster recommended https://ebook.chessvision.ai. We discussed it here.

We have yet to back from more chess.com users for feedback. It won’t convert your legally-owned PDFs to pin files that you upload to your own database or engine, but you can use their interface for analysis and to run Stockfish on.
Hello,
may be it arrives a little late, but I have just released a new version of an application that does the job (ChessPdfBrowser v1.20)
If you are curious about it, you can go to the official site (is the following):

I hope it is useful to anybody.
Convert pdf into a chess format (pgn, chessbase)
I sometimes use chess material, which is only available in pdf-format and regularly would find it useful, to have it in a chess format (pgn or chessbase-file). Sometimes I transcribe it manually, but it is rather time-consuming. Does somebody know a tool/software, which I can use for that purpose? Maybe someone have some ideas or hints about to deal with this issue more effectively. I would be thankful for any kind of help in this matter. Please contact me on the forum or via my email: psydienst@web.de Many thanks.
