Crack in lacquer, how to fix

Hi all,

I have a crack in lacquer in the chess set that I got from my grandpa. It was probably caused by someone dropping the chess set and it hit something.

I do not want to make it disappear, but just to make it less visible. Is there that can be quickly and safely done so it blends in more? Maybe filling it with some oil, epoxy or something similar? Would a paint thinner help? Do you have any advice, or should I let it be?

I do not have that kind of skill... The wood is in excellent condition, the remaining of the finish too, so I'm looking for a quick and simple fix if it exists.

Hi  cookey try a light sanding on that spot with a low grade sand paper , Then some cooked linseed oil , Should bring it back . here's a photo of my fixed board from the 50.s

@cookey -

Take the board to someone who is expert in finishing/restoring wood. Ask them for their advice. For example, someone who builds/restores furniture; or a luthier - one who builds/repairs/restores wood musical instruments (guitars, violins, etc.) - they will know exactly what to do. The cracks in your board's finish are due to the board having been exposed to extreme variations in temperature over time. For heaven's sake, never apply epoxy to the surface of a wood chess board (at least, not one you value) - that would only compound your problems!
