Custom 3D Printed Chess Sets

I wanted to take a poll. I have a 3D printer, and as it’s sitting around collecting dust, I’m looking to 3D print custom chess sets and make a little money. Best case I would be ready to take orders around the end of the month. I’ll start out with PLA, but as I get the funds and demand, I’ll upgrade my printer to print a variety of filaments. How many of you would be interested in such chess sets/pieces?
KnightsForkCafe

Yes! I have two 3D printed sets right now and would like to own more. Hopefully you are able to upgrade and start using woodfil filaments.

It would be interesting to see a BCE-like set

I have been printing BCE Blitz sets for users of these fora for a few weeks now, message me if interested.

@ifekali nice to see the competition! 😂 The pieces look good, though.

Update: I have discovered my printer can print wood filament, and once the few upgrades I ordered come in I will start printing prototypes. I’ll be able to print in any piece style and in plastic or wood. Once the upgrades are finished I’ll post a picture of the 3D printed wood piece. If anyone has any requests or feedback, I would appreciate that. Thanks to people who already posted!

Will you be designing the sets yourself? Keep in mind most freely available 3D STL chess set designs are published under non-commercial license.

Yes, I’ll be designing the sets myself. Unless my customers want to use a specific file that they designed, or they want me to use a file that is under commercial license, I’ll just sell my own custom sets. I can use CAD programs, so that wouldn’t be a problem.

I would be in for a set done with woodfil.

The woodfil set Izmet posted was the one he made for me. Still have yet to play a game with the set due to quarantine COVID-19.

Love the colors . . .

when you made the king, queen or knight did you make them verticle?

Or did you make them horizontally in half to save time and then putting them together?

I know that it can run while you're sleeping . . .

I like the design but not the Rook, it's to slim . . .

IMHO

I really like the idea of 3D printing chess pieces, but I can't get past the lines/ridges created as the pieces are layered. Is there a way to create smooth 3D printed pieces?

I’ll experiment as much as I can to make smooth pieces. Reducing vibration on the printer helps, once I apply finish to it that would help dramatically. For example:

The left side is a control print, while the right side is a print with lots of finish. See the difference?

ChessAuthor

Yes, I see. Almost like a varnish of sorts.

Would you buy such pieces if they looked like that?

ChessAuthor

While the ridges are still noticeable, they're not as prominent...but I think I would need to handle them first, see them in person. But maybe.

I print them vertical.

It's too bad we don't have an original Windsor Castle set to scan and 3D print. I believe with Fischer's close ties to that set in all the vintage photos. You could make a killing financially with that one. I have never wanted a wooden version of that set. Just a composite of better material than the brittle original ...
