Is Deep HIARCS Chess Explorer worth the money?

(For Mac by the way)

It's not cheap but if I were still using a Mac it would be my GUI of choice.

I don't have a Mac. But on my Windows system Hiarcs is the chess software I use the most. It's fast, easy to install engines, & has many useful features such as an Opening Explorer.  I can rapidly set up a position to analyze.

Two years ago my hard drive got wiped. The author helped me re-install Hiarcs and even provided an updated version.  Can't say the same about another chess software that had been on that drive.

I have a Mac and I am experiencing the same dilemma.  It is evident from other posts on this forum that unless you are computer savvy you will have trouble getting Stockfish 14 to rum on the Mac.  The most recent version that can be downloaded direct is SF11.

My concern about HIARCS, which comes with HIARCS 14 engine preinstalled, is that it was developed some 10 years ago, and I don't understand how people can still be considering it if it is that old. I tried to get some clarification from their support section, but all I received were some links to the online videos and shop but no answers to my specific questions. The videos are also 10 years old, so it certainly feels like a dead duck to me.

I'd be interested to learn of others' experiences with this app. Is it Mac specific or a wrapped version of the Windows app? It would also be great if someone could post an idiot's guide to making SF14 run on the Mac. I understand that it can be done. It is the "how" that eludes we technically challenged mortals!

To answer this question (is Deep HIARCS Chess Explorer worth the money) you need to clarify the intended use.

HIARCS Chess Explorer is what I use on my Mac and it can be purchased for $42.  Not expensive.

The question you need to ask is do you need the Deep (multi-core) HIARCS 14 engine or non-deep (single core).  $69 vs $42.  Still not expensive compared to other commercial chess engines.

Otherwise, use HIARCS w/Stockfish or some other engine.

HIARCS is my preferred GUI.  I have a variety of engines that I use for analysis for fun.  But I'm also happy posting a PGN into lichess or chess.com for analysis and a game report.
