Deep Thinking: Where Machine Intelligence Ends and Human Creativity Begins by GK

Hello everyone!

I've just known that there is an upcoming book by Garry Kasparov about Man vs. Machine. I thought about starting a thread to tell our hopes about it then discuss it later when it is released.

I hope it will be as excellent as GK's series with more overwhelmingly impressive analysis discussing playing against machines in an objective way. I hope that it will include discussions about the subject not just by Kasparov but by other players and computer specialists.

In addition I hope that after its release Kasparov will start writing a "My Great Successors" series about the rest of the world champions to our days.

Please share your expectations & opinions.

Here is its page on Amazon:

anyone who wants this book, maybe consider buying from house of staunton, they have autographed copies!

I read it and it is a review of the matches with Deep Blue. I enjoyed it. However, it doesn't contain any diagrams and while the comments about the moves are fairly detailed, you need to be pretty familiar with the games (or open up the pages on Chessgames, etc.) to follow them.

I think a lot of the book's comments would be incomprehensible to someone who isn't fairly advanced in chess. For example, the sacrifice Nxe6 on move 8 in game 6 by Deep Blue.

How is someone who doesn't play chess going to make sense of that? If they can't make sense of that, how are they going to make anything about Kasparov's speculatations about that line being added as an override to the database of book moves on the morning of the 6th game?

A lot of people have played chess and those that followed the Deep Blue Kasparov battles have probably seen some chess diagrams before. I would reissue the book with the games scores and some diagrams.

Then if I make a complaint about that move, a lot more people would be able to make sense of it.

Thank you for the review Cool When I saw the preview of this book it seemed to be of much poorer quality than Kasparov's previous works, I think if he could just collaborate with specialists in different aspects of computer chess & other experienced players in order to give a collective perspective of the subject this book would have been a real gem.

My only hope now is that he starts writing a "My Great Successors" series.

I heard Kasparov on the radio, a few days ago, talking about his book. Didn't catch the name of the program. Anyone know?

fabelhaft

Edward Winter is no fan of Kasparov in general, but calls Deep Thinking "an absorbing, often brilliant, book which no chess lover should miss".
