DGT 2500: the new official FIDE chess clock

What's with color? So bright imo. Beige or brown is best imo. Like DGT XL colors.

So is the DGT just a rebadged Leap?

Well my DGT 2500 arrived yesterday and I added it to my collection:

I can confirm what lotsobots has already verified: the forced move counter option DOES work and is very nice for us old timers.

This will be my new main “goto” clock

I have several chess clocks but I’m not satisfied with any. This one looks like it will do what my others won’t. Plus the clear display looks quite visible for my aging eyes. I’l probably get it.

I’ve had this clock for about one week now.
It really works well.  I plan on using this as my main, go-to clock for quite awhile now.

This clock won't last a week for me with the way my friends and I play blitz. I doubt it'll handle the aggressive pounding. Chronos is the king of chess clocks.

BigLew

If they can get the price of this one down to the fifty dollar price point of the DGT NA, it’s likely to make other options has-beens. Offer it in various color options and DGT will not just be a leader in the chess clock market, it will have it cornered. The demise of the V-Tek proves folks don’t want to pay too much for a chess clock.

The V-Tek is no longer produced?  I wasn't aware.

Well ACE doesn't have it.  Chess House doesn't have it. Rochester Chess Center doesn't have it.  Even the Visual-Tek doesnt have it.  I would assume it has been discontinued.  just a valid assumption and deduction.  Ask Shelby Lohrman.

Do you know how the feel of the rocker compares to the dgt 3000? I'm looking to buy my first clock and like how the 3000 feels after having used it.

I’m hoping - as time rolls on - and/or perhaps with an upgraded DGT 3000 - that new colours and finishes will emerge. 🤞

I'm finding it very tough to get excited about a plastic clock made in China. Also seems to be considerably lighter than the 3000, 2010 etc.

How are you coming to this conclusion? The specs on their website list the 2500 as quite a bit heavier than either of those clocks (310 vs 210 and 270 for the old ones) . Pretty much all electronics are made in China, or at least the parts inside will be. Almost all clocks and consumer electronics in general are plastic.

In answer to your first, I checked the specs (quickly) and thought I saw that this clock is even lighter than its predecessors. If that's not true, then I stand corrected. I'll check again. On the second point, you're right: all electronics are made in China these days - I find it hard to get excited about almost any of it. Don't get me wrong: I'm super excited about some things from China. The country makes great camping gear. It's also making some amazing (for the price) hifi amplifiers and speakers. It even makes a few really great wrist watches. But this? It's just a cheap, plastic, battery operated clock.

One thing to keep in mind is that this clock does offer a mode/feature that the others do not

You should value a clock like this on its funcionality. And nothing else. And that goes for the materials too, plastic is light. You want a wooden chess clock? Get one, but don't complain about it's funcionality. DGT revolutionized the chess clock radically, both in design and functionality. Most clocks you see around are cheap knock offs that use the DGT lever.

Well as of this morning. I have one on the way to me. I bought it through the chesscomshop.com arm of the HOS store. It's about 70 bucks there, yet with the Easter sale code it knocks 20% off, so that basically covers the shipping cost. I'm looking forward to it.

TundraMike

Hi BigLew, I do believe they have the best price on that clock. Especially with the 20% off.

It does look nice.

BigLew

It arrived today. Photos below. Very easy to figure out how to use. It only has a one page instruction manual printed on one sheet of paper and folded four ways. It does not need the slick glossy printed manual that the DGT NA has because it is intuitive. Resetting is easy press the on/off button twice quickly. It has Scrabble mode, something my late wife would have appreciated as she was a scrabble player. The 2010 also had it but not the DGTNA.

I really like the bold easy to read display, I can read every thing on it with out a pair of cheaters, the only chess clock that I now own that I can do that. Twenty years ago I could use my old Excalibur Game Time just fine. 'Til I got too old to read the fine print on the screen. Now Days I'm too old to read "DELAY" on the DGT NA. That's why I wanted this clock I can read everything with out reading glasses.

My only criticism so far is that it is a bit loud compared to the DGT NA, 3000, and 2010. However, it is no where near as loud as the old Excalibur and Saitek clocks. Certainly louder than buttons or touch pads.

It seems slightly heavier than a DGT NA, still fairly light weight, but stable. Seconds are displayed at all times even above the twenty minute mark.

BigLew, looks great! Please give us an update once you’ve used it in combat
