yeah but what else do you expect from such high profile tournaments, they can afford to have this equipment for their events it is after all it is the best broadcasting board for such events. but for yourself personally you only need 1 board, and i highly reccommend the bluetooth version, but ultimately you have to decide whether the cost is justifiable to you. for me personally the DGT board, the pieces and its software are by far the best investment i have made with regards to chess. :) if you do decide to go ahead and purchase one, and ever need help with any issues i'm more than happy to help out if i can. :)

majorspuds, how is it that the DGT Board is the best investment you have made?
What kind of games and uses do you use it for?
What is it about the DGT board that nothing else can do for you?
You recommend the bluetooth version for the individual. I used to own a serial port one and it was cumbersome to use. Does the bluetooth make it easier and more useful?

in terms of investment, i use the board on a frequent basis for multiple things such as playing vs Fritz, analysis with fritz, and playing online at various websites that support the DGT boards, such as playchess.com, FICS & ICC in addition to this i also use the board as a broadcast board for our board 1 league matches which in turn are usually broadcast through the playchess.com broadcasts room. aswell as this i could simply hook the board upto fritz and have it follow a game with analysis switched on for other people to view, obviously out of view of the players :)
for me the board and pieces are awesome to use, it takes away the 2 dimentional board that so many people are used to playing with on screen, if your using the fritz sofware, you can set it so that fritz calls back replies whether it be whilst playing the computer or playing online.
i've never used a serial board but i know they are used in a vast majority of major events including congresses, such as blackpool and the british championships. i previously owned a USB board and it was terrible at holding connection, plus the amount of times the cable came loose from the board and killing connection was uncountable. so far with my bluetooth board i have experienced little to no problems with connection i've actually had the board set up upstairs and the laptop downstairs and yet connection still remains active despite interfernce from walls etc plus you dont have any wires to worry about knocking outta the board.

I have one more question. How is the board powered? Do you need to keep it plugged into a wall power outlet or is there some kind of battery option?

if your dgt board is separated from your laptop that far in playing against fritz, how do you know the fritz moves ? do you set volume loud enough for you to hear it ? also, are those pieces are weighted ?

the boards are powered using rechargeable lithium batteries which are placed in the underside of the board(opposite side to playing surface) under a small screwed down compartment. the boards usually take around 8hrs to charge to full capacity, but once charged last somewhere in the region of 80hrs i think? so more than adequate for club matches or individual usage. yes you can use the board whilst its plugged in but if you have sufficent charge in the board, why would you ? usually when i charge my board i do this overnight to avoid inconvience, wake up unplug and its ready to go again. when your not using the board and its switched off the battery holds its charge extremely well, obviously it will lose some of its charge say over a week, but its virtually un-noticable

like i say this was only as a distance / realiabilty test, for that particular test though i whacked the volume up to maximum so i could hear fritz call its replies. but there are a couple of other ways that get the moves, via the clock is one option for a start, simply select the option through the rabbit connect software to have moves displayed on the clock(providing you have one) or alternatively i would imagine hooking up a bluetooth headset and recieve the moves through that.
with regards to the pieces being weighted i believe they are standard weight, as the space in the bases of the pieces would already be taken up by the coil resonators the pieces use to communicate with the board. if anything i would probably say with that, that they are single weighted but wouldnt be able to tell you for sure.
The wesite says they are targeting sub $100 price point. Interestingly their specs seems to outdo DGTs.

I have mailed them and they seemed really nice. Asked them about piece recognition etc and they sent a detailed mail, why is it very important. Really looking forward to own one. And the price point is awesome and i wouldn't mind paying more!

Yeah, looks interesting, but looks like they don't do piece recognition.
Had a novag citrine doesn't do piece recognition had very bad experience with it. Can't slide pieces, doesn't register movement well and so on. But the one in the link should be good for casual players!

oh god yeah, set the option for setup in rabbit queen and put all the pieces on the except for the kings, when you got the position you need without the kings then put the colour of the king of the side to move on the board last and it will show in fritz
Also The Bluetooth Version of the DGT E board works with android app" Acid Ape Chess".
is there any body or a company makes or convert a regular chess set into a dgt compatible ? because I don't like the pieces that comes with dgt board. you guys know what I meant.
i'm almost certain that DGT have the sole rights for producing these boards, the boards need to be a certain thickness to take the software that is installed. like threebeast said though there are around 5-6 different piece sets available for use with the board, just a question of taste really. :)
