DGT Pi vs. (DGT 3000 + Raspberry Pi + Picochess)

Hello,

I'm planning to buy a DGT board soon, but I've seen that it is possible to have a DGT Pi clock attached to turn the set into a chess computer you can play with. However, it is also possible, instead, to have a DGT 3000 clock hooked up to a Raspberry Pi with Picochess installed.

Can someone please provide advantages/disadvantages between these two approaches? It seems to me that the second one may require some manual hardware tweaking, which could put the DGT 3000 at risk. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks a lot in advance for your feedback

I don't have experience with those 2 configurations, but I do have some experience with hobby electronics.  The thing about Raspberry Pi or anything you assemble yourself is that even if it works, after a while, you'll forget the configurations and have to pretty much start from scratch.  Much better to buy pre-packaged (and documented) commercial products unless you are into tinkering more than chess in this case.

You're right, particularly when I'm not much proficient with electronics even at the hobby level. Going with the commercial product would be a safer bet for me.

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply

If you already have a DGT 3000 clock and have basic soldering skills, adding a Raspberry Pi to your DGT 3000 is not terribly difficult.  However, if you don't do it correctly, you could destroy your clock or Raspberry Pi.  Below are links for two approaches on doing it.  The author of the second link sells a conversion kit on eBay for folks in Europe (you can contact him to see if he would ship one to you in Mexico).

I was able to get a DGT Pi on sale recently on Amazon for $200 USD.  If you can get a DGT Pi for a good price, that would be the simplest and safest approach.
