Do we really need weighted pieces? and so many sets?

Hello,

just asking, why do we like weighted pieces?

Why do we purchase so many sets? I found myself playing mostly with the same one...

I doubt that even Carlsen or Kramnik have so many chess sets as some and included me in here...

Why is that? lol

And also even Fisher famous Dubrovnik chess set was unweighted, so the question is : Why do we want double or even triple weighted pieces?

Please post your unweighted pieces :)

What is your opinion?

Thanks

I have an unweited lardy. Never have problems with unweited sets, not sure what the weigths are sopouse to fix?... anyway have to admit the felling of heavy give the impresion of more value.

And yes defenitly need a lot of sets.

The way I look at it is that they are art. With the benefit that a fairly decent painting can cost $5000 and up, while a fairly decent chess set can cost $200.

I don't really play OTB, so it is all about look at them and love them.

This set we have feels unweighted although we're unsure.

The question isn't whether WE need weighted pieces; It's whether YOU need weighted pieces. I'll do what I want to do, and I'd hope that you'll do what you want to do. Smile

Most people dont collect anything out of need , so need has nothing to do with it .

Do we actually need so many chess sets?

No, but they are less likely to be knocked over, which makes for a much better playing experience overall.

Do we actually need so many chess sets?

No, but people don't need lots of things that they collect.  They collect them for enjoyment.  People don't need books and books of stamps, coins, baseball cards, whatever.  People like collecting them or just having them.

Carlsen and Kramnik are chess players, but not necessarily chess set collectors.  It should, therefore, not be surprising that they have different priorities and desires.

Wow wow no need to get all upset lol. Of course you do what you want to do lol. It was a simple observation.

I agree very true indeed

Ok maybe I should rephrase the question ... why do we have so many sets?

OK, I'll let you in on the real reason we have so many sets...

We need a lot of sets so our pet cats won't know which ones are the valuable sets and which ones are the cheapie sets.

I like the feel of weighted pieces and I'm a gear junky - I like having a variety of sets to choose from.

Haha I have 4 cats and 5 dogs. They are a handful and like to try and knock over my chess games. That's why I like the weighted pieces

Tournament chess set USCF I have 2 both double weighted.  The extra set comes in handy with club play.  I lke the feel of the pieces over some other single weight sets I have played via other players.  If I ever need to order another set I would look at tripple weight.

Unweighted NOJ Dubrovnik I, the first one Gregor Novak crafted. It's fine for blitz and travels well.

Very nice!!

I love the Rooks!

Fo me it all depends on the design of the set and what I want it for. Heavy pieces feel nice and thump the board with authority when plunked down. Lighter pieces move faster and easier when playing quickly or running through variations during study. The trick with lighter pieces is to design them with lower centers of mass and/or wider bases so they are stable.
I like them both.

This is my favorite picture of Alekhine , anyone know anything about the set in front of him ?

Gomer_Pyle

It looks like a Jaques set. Just comparing pictures, it looks like it may be from 1890 - 1900. If I'm interpreting the pictures correctly it's the only Jaques series that has the Queen's crown protruding that much above the points.

But I'm nowhere near an expert and I'm only comparing against this site.
