Does anyone know this chess board maker?

Hi,

I was looking into an offer for a chess board that really appeals to me. However, I cannot find any information online about its maker:

It just says "Wood Master" on the bottom:

Have you ever heard of this or do you own one? Thanks in advance.

Don't know about the maker of that board.

However you might contact this maker of custom solid wood boards (in Greece) to enquire if he will make a board to your specification.  Be sure to specify the desired square dimension as well....

Chess Set Sizing - Pieces vs Board...

The primary sizing criteria for the pieces vs board is that of square size vs King base diameter...

A good rule of thumb is...

King base diameter = 0.75 * square size

or equivalently....

Square size = 1.33 * King base diameter

Any variation from these ratios, or the size of individual pieces and pawns, becomes a matter of personal preference...

Strong recommendation for Sakis Tsiogkas, especially as you are in the EU. Platform boards are his speciality, and his finish would be a lot better than that board. I owned one and it was excellent quality.

Thanks for the tip. I looked at the Greek boards, and they're nice and competitively priced (I know a workshop from Berlin that makes boards like these, but they are €100-130 more expensive than the offer from Greece. They're just not specifically what I'm looking for in terms of style. What appeals to me about that board pictured above is are the "steps" in the frame. The pictured board is supposed to be from Russia, but the maker is not the same as the seller.

You can always enquire of a board maker if they will make a board to your requirements.  Send them a photo of the style of board you would like to have made and ask if they can make one like it.  (I expect that adding embellishments such as "steps" to the surround would also add substantially to the price.)

Very beautiful board

Well, I did buy the chess board, it arrived yesterday. You can see that it's handmade (the individual blocks for the fields have slight "rims" around them, but I think it's okay.

Interestingly, the logo on the back isn't printed on, it's inlaid.

But I can find absolutely no information about a company called "Wood Master Chess" online. Zilch!

Beautiful...Congrats on your new board and saving a bundle. I love Germany...I really do. But everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING) is so much more expensive there. I don't know how anyone can do business with them.

Thanks. I imported this one from Spain, it was an auction item. €90 plus shipping.

[Adding to this thread because of the mention of Sakis Tsiogkas and his woodshop]

I recently acquired a board from Athanasios Tsiogkas of Sakis Tsiogkas Wood (a small portion of which can be seen in my avatar), and couldn't be happier with the craftsmanship. More importantly, I was glad to support an independent craftsman. I've grown quite disillusioned by the [under]world of import chess sets for a variety of reasons, and believe strongly in supporting the individual before any corporation. Further, Athanasios is a pleasant, helpful and wonderful person with whom to interact.

His boards evoke tradition yet utilize modern hardwoods and techniques--no high gloss finishes, excessive moulding, etc. They're true player's boards, solid, and absolutely perfect...I cannot find a single flaw in any of the 64 squares.

Congrats on your acquisition @RooksOfDoubt.

Thank you, @MCH818, but truly there's no need. It is difficult to find anything artisanal in today's mass produced, laminate, Rooms-Not-To-Go world. I also know how comparitively difficult it is to find good, modern boards vs. chessmen...former<latter. Provided others find Athanasios' designs pleasing, I think many more players would find suitable boards for their pieces.

Beautiful!

Sakis Tsiogkas boards are indeed top of the line. How would an MTM board compare with this.

MTM boards tend to be quite pricy.

That Sakis Tsiogkas board looks great

What woods did you use?

How is the surface finish?
