Does anyone sell a 2" (50mm) square, mousepad or silicone board?

I'm having a heck of a time trying to find one. I see vinyl with 2" squares. Wood (of course). And even leather. But I would've thought there's someone out there selling this common size.

Already contacted Shelby (ACE).

BTW. I noticed KimboLimbo on Etsy is taking a break from accepting new orders for custom leather boards. She appears to be swamped and catching up on existing orders. Looks like the word is out regarding her quality thick leather custom boards. Good for her. thumbup.png

UPDATE. April 23. 2021. KimboLimbo has turned the lights back on to her Etsy storefront shop. New custom options for notations, sizes, and colors.

I remember trying to look for one in 2019 or last year. The closest was a 1.875 board from chesshouse. I found this thread but the board in the last post is vinyl. https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/50mm-or-55mm-vinyl-boards-where-to-buy-in-north-america

Thanks. Yeah, I saw Chesshouse and HoS has 2" vinyl. Not a fan of roll up vinyl though.

It's interesting to see such a big hole in the chess equipment industry. There's a whole world of pieces smaller than 3.75" Kings. Especially in the vintage market.

Shelby came to the rescue once again last night. I gotta get me one of those chess board printing machines he has in the secret back office lab. I'll be rich! Like printing money. Haha!

I know that you said that vinyl is a no go for you. However if someone else is interested in 50mm squares for a club style board. Here is a good place to get one.

Plastic roll-up Chess Board 50 mm (chessgamesshop.com)

I know that the DGT Starter Box sets come with a double fold cardboard chessboard with 50mm squares. Could be an option. It is quite slim to nothing to find boards with 50mm squares that are not wooden.

Although I was originally looking for a portable 2 inch (50mm) square mousepad or silicone product, for the sake of discussion, as noted above, let's open it up to other options.

Wood and Vinyl options are not that difficult to find, so we can leave that out of the discussion for now.

For $32 there is the Official World Chess plastic set. 1.9 inch (48mm) square. Double-folding, cardboard chess board for portability. Must be purchased with the plastic 32 piece set. So, not really ideal. But it's an option. Available at WorldChess, ChessHouse, and Amazon.

And from Etsy, there is this 2 inch (50mm) square. Double folding, coated paper chess board for portability. $10.58 USD shipped. Looks kind of thin. But it's coated and cheap. So it might be worth a gamble. The Etsy store is called: CrafterChopped. Located in Spain. Free shipping.

As stated before, it's real slim pickings out there.

@MCH818 The #2 option seems to be the best one I have seen. I do like mouse pad boards but silicone boards are terrible in my opinion. Especially if you own pets. Their hair is like a magnet to silicone boards. Mouse pads are my favorite roll up style boards but they are prone to staining if not taken care of or just have a mishap at the coffee shop while playing a game. Those folding PVC boards in my opinion are the best portable chessboards. Lightweight, always lay flat, resists stains, and pet hairs are not stuck to the surface. They are not the best boards to fit in a tournament bag but against the pros and cons. PVC folding boards have more pros than cons than any other option out there.

Update:

From messaging Shelby, to placing the custom order, to "Pawns on the board", it took exactly 4 days.

The Red&Black thin mousepad board with 2 inch (50mm) squares is a perfect fit for my Chavet No5 (3.5 inch Kings) set.

Last pic shows the board side by side with the original 2.25" square board.

Thanks again for making it happen Shelby.

Message @ShelbyLohrman (amchesseq.com) here on the CB&E forum. Red&Black mouspad. No linen texture. And specify the square size. He has the specs on file. He says it usually takes about 2 weeks depending on how backed up they are with custom board orders. But both times, I received it much faster than anticipated. Enjoy!

Wait wait wait, can he print any boards he has in 2 inch squares??? Like his Wood grain mousepads?

I don't see why not. He can even print 32 ducks in the 2" squares if you want. He is surprisingly the only vendor that I know of who offers 2" square mousepad boards in the industry at this time. Shoot him a message.

zbleraj,

Printing one off silicone boards is a pain.  I can do them, but the problem is we literally have to take a blowtorch to a pre-existing silicone board and print off the back of it.  They have a coating on them to keep the print on them that needs to get burned off.

If you need I can do custom mousepad boards in any size 2.25" or under.  Same with vinyl chess boards.  I can do the silicone, but it does not come out at the quality levels I want.

thanks

The problem is that I have the vinyl one and I need something more flexible, so it can be actually folded sometimes or just loosely thrown somewhere into the bag. Mousepads are horrible regarding aging top layer. Moreover, they are bad for playing outdoors in kinda moist weather. For me, the more expensive price is not a big issue. What I know is that I want the one above in the proper size happy.png.

Undersized silicone boards are not easy to find. If you do find one it will most likely come as a set combined with pieces.

I have a Starbucks one that came out 7-8(?) years ago. It has 1-7/8" (48mm) squares. 16-1/4" overall size. They pop up once in a while on eBay.

And I have this small 1.5" (38mm) square, silicone board with pieces. I think it's $30 on Amazon.

Good luck in your search. Check back if you find anything.
