eBooks and their chess games within

I have always collected my books in real life paper form.   now some books i want are either out of print or too much $$    So time to enter 21st century and buy some ebook-kindle books i guess.

Browsing over lots of intros etc i get the impression on some books you can play out the books games on-screen with the right program/s.  All I have is my old copy Shredder classic 4 which I have never up-dated as i don't put it to much use.

so can i buy kindle books from Amazon with fast n easy interactive moves or will i need to painfully set 'em up on shredder each time?

I don't think there is ebook wher eyou can move the pieces around like chess.com puzzle boards.  Setting up pieces with ebook can be very easy when the author includes FEN; it'll just be copy and paste.

Kindle ebooks are not interactive in the sense of allowing the movement of chess pieces on screen.  Kindle is essentially a glorified .pdf reader.

For the experience you are seeking check out Everyman Chess eBooks, which use their free Chess Viewer app for IoS and Android devices which allows not only viewing of the book's text, but also the games & pieces to be displayed on the app's chess board and moves can be made on screen.  Of course, as far as I know, it only works with eBooks produced by Everyman Chess...

Also, games recorded in .pgn file format can be loaded, displayed and played out on many different pgn viewer apps available for that purpose (including the Chess.com analysis board, via a simple copy-paste of the text in the pgn file).   A very good program for that purpose is the free Chessbase 2013 Reader app which can be downloaded from here...

Russ:  can you use an engine app on the Everyman pgn files to analyze positions?

I haven't tried it (I typically don't use a chess engine), but since PGN is PGN regardless of who creates it, then I would think if the engine will load a PGN file, then the answer should be - Yes...

This is what the Everyman Chess site has to say about the formats they provide when you purchase one of their eBooks - i.e., they provide the eBook in 4 formats including PGN.  Note that the free Chessbase 2013 Reader app also reads .cbv and PGN format...

Forward Chess app is by far the best iteractive ebook reader and they collaborate with many editors: New in chess, Quality chess, Russel etc.

(I wonder if it is legal to use home-made scans provided that you own original printed book?)

Some programs allow you to scan a diagram with the camera (i'm talking about mobile devices) and give you the FEN (or analyze) of it. I have not tried them to much ("chessify" is the name) but it works.

Just 2 more questions - 1 the Everyman site says you get the book in 4 formats including Kindle, I have a book on my tablet which I read with Chess Viewer, is it possible to copy that content onto my Amazon Kindle paperwhite, as well? (and for that matter, the forward chess books too).

Sorry I'm not computer literate, but if there is a way, I'll see if I can look into it!

Not really a question, but looking on the everyman website (with my windows PC) I see a  chess viewer Chess secrets bundle (5 titles) for $30, but going to the everyman store using the chess viewer app on my tablet, which I think is what I have to use to buy stuff, it only lists the separate titles, at individual £ prices, which works out more expensive.  Also, using the "tablet" store I see no "promotions" or "reward points" section.  Maybe this feature is only for U.S.A. buyers who have a separate store (to U.K., where I am) (or just as likely I'm looking in the wrong place!).
