Where is a good place to buy an electronic chess set. I'm in the St.Louis area. I noticed that the discovery stores are closing down. Any other recomendations.

Thanks,

Steve

Yeah, it seems harder and harder to find a good electronic chess set NOT online.  I was looking into those recently, and it seems that your best bet might be online.  I would check any hobby stores in the area -- that might be your best bet.

Since you are from St. Louis, please give a wave to the Cheshire Inn for me if you are ever in that part of town (near Wash. U., right?).  God, I love that place.  It hasn't been sold to some huge hotel chain, has it?  If so, I've got the noose ready...Yell

Can anyone recommend a reasonable but challenging electronic chessboard?

If you're looking for an electronic chess game just to play against an AI opponent, then I'm thinking the Vonset / Femuey L6 model is the best out there right now. But before going into details, what are you wanting to do with it?

I want to reenact master games and learn using Stockfish technology on a board. I’m sick and tired of reading variations of variations in books and getting lost/bored and not knowing how to profitably get back to the mainline and say “Ahh ok I get it”. I figured an intelligent board could show me the pros and cons of moves. You know what I’m trying to say?

@Noreaster99 So maybe you're not looking for a fully self-contained chess game like the Femuey L6 (around $160). The Chessup (around $270) is partially self-contained to a point, but also connects via bluetooth to their app for higher levels and online play. The connection to their app allows for easier setup scenarios and may provide what you want. There are other 'connected' boards too which are good for training and may be cheaper since they are just connected boards without any built-in AI like Chessnut Air (around $180) or DGT Pegasus (around $250). There are some pros and cons with these 'connected' boards so just look at some reviews for these. Then there are some emerging boards (maybe not quite ready and still developing) which cost even more, like more than $500. I've seen a lot of these companies make promises which are delayed, charge extra subscriptions, or missed altogether, or it could be risky to invest that much money for products that only half work.

I don't know if any of that fits your goals, but it's really not clear cut right now.
