The Bauhaus chess set was designed in the 1920s by Joseph Hartwig and is famous for its radical simplicity. I always wanted to get one for my collection, but even the sets produced today are very expensive. Today I found a set and board in pristine condition for a very good price. I guess this set was a gift to someone who didn’t know what he got, perhaps a chess player without any idea about chess history.
Today I found in a flea market in Bern, Switzerland, a wonderful chess table with Regency pieces. The table is damaged, but nothing that can’t be fixed by a specialist. The price was 60 SFr, which is of course very low for this piece. Actually I never saw a board with such detailed intarsia.
The set is unfortunately not complete, one black pawn was replaced by a small black bishop (!). This is however not a problem, as I have a lot of Regency chess sets to use with the board, some of them of good quality.
