Excalibur Kingmaster II 911E-2: How to play checkers?

Sort:

I bought a Kingmaster II (model 911E-2) from a Goodwill store. It seems to be in good working order and I can play chess games with it.

But I cannot figure out how to get it to play checkers. It has a "Checkers" button and when I press it, it beeps, but no checkers game is played - still wants to play chess.

I can't find any instructions on-line for the Kingmaster II; the only on-line instructions are for the Kingmaster III which has more buttons and is not the same.

Can anybody help?

If anybody has the instructions for a Kingmaster II, could you scan it and post it or email it to me?

Thanks.

I haven't heard of it sorry pal. But i'm sure if you hang on there will be someone available to assist !

Not sure this will help as its for the Kingmaster 111 model: looks like the default setting is for chess and to switch between the two games you have to press the new game button which brings up a notification in the display that it is black to move first (as is the case in checkers). Good luck sorting this: note 3.1 in the following http://www.chesshouse.com/v/vspfiles/manuals/kingmaster%20iii%20911e-3.pdf

Apologies, just realised you've already tried those instructions!

MikeyCrowder

Yea, billybilly71, the Kingmaster III checkers instructions don't work for Kingmaster II. Pressing the New Game button repeatedly just starts the chess game over again.

Well, I tried to find the manual online, but no luck. I even tried the Internet Archive. I hope you eventually find a copy. I suspect the only solution would be for someone who has one to scan it and upload or send it to you.

UPDATE!  I found the manual online!

It wasn't so easy. I used the WayBack Machine to find old web pages from Excalibur Electronics that contained manuals. The WBM has a gadget at the top of the web page that shows all of the dates a web page was updated and I just kept clicking through them until "Kingmaster and Kingmaster II Travel" showed up in the list. With hopes soring, I clicked on the pdf link and...bummer - the pdf doco was not there. So I kept advancing through the web page revisions until "Kingmaster III" showed up on the list and then I went back one date. Again I clicked on the pdf link and...success! The pdf manual was mine!

And then, I noticed something. The URL for Excalibur Electronics was not www.ExcaliburElectronics.com as it once was. It had changed to www.ebExcaliburCreative.com/documents/manuals. So I pointed my browser to that URL and, lo and behold, I found a manuals page and on it was the manual for "911" which is the "Kingmaster and Kingmaster II Travel"!

I now can play checkers and chess with it, and get my clock cleaned with both!

Pretty good little chess/checkers computer for 99 cents, eh?

I used to play chess quite a bit in college, but that was 40 years ago. Now that I know my new son-in-law can play, I will be using the Kingmaster to sharpen my skills.

Doesn't the link you posted.....http://www.ebexcaliburcreative.com/documents/manuals.just bring up the same document/manual as this?: http://www.chesshouse.com/v/vspfiles/manuals/kingmaster%20iii%20911e-3.pdf??

MikeyCrowder

Well, no. The link to chesshouse you provided brings up the manual for the Kingmaster III. The link from ebExcaliburCreative contains the manual for the Kingmaster/Kingmaster II. They are not the same manuals.

billybilly71

I appreciate they may not be the same manuals. I'm just going on the link you provided as I don't see the Kingmaster II manual listed there at all, just the Kingmaster III. Either way, glad you got your problem sorted.

MikeyCrowder

I should have been more clear. The file name for the Kingmaster/Kingmaster II manual is 911_169_echess_MA.pdf. It's not listed under the K's like the manual for the Kingmaster III is.

Sorry for the confusion.

You can sharpen your chess skills on Chess.com with real people for free!!

MikeyCrowder

Yes, kleelof, I plan on doing that after I can bump up the game level a few notches and beat it. I also would like to get an "official" rating, but right now, that would be a joke and an embarrassment. Can one get a rating on Chess.com for free or is a paid membership required?

kleelof

Sure you get a rating. However, it's no really respected outside of Chess.com. But, that isn't really important. Just have fun.

No worries, you solved your problem so all is good. Enjoy!!

I know this is an old thread but does your unit allow for Take Back?  I have the same unit and take back does nothing. I wait until it’s my move to use it as the manual suggests. Then still nothing. If I press it a few times I get four hyphens.
