I don't own any of the ones you're looking at, but I bought one of these about a year ago:

I am delighted with it. The quality is exceptionally good, especially so when you consider the price.
Assuming yours use the same storage as mine, and it looks as if they do, then the inlay is a chunk of hard-ish white foam. I don't know what type of plastic it is, but it's like an aerated, squishy, polystyrene. Hard enough to give a good resistance to being pressed, but not brittle. This is then overlayed with a thin layer of green baize-like material. The pieces are held very tightly in place, and on mine you'd have to have a very close match to the shape and dimensions of the supplied pieces to use any others. Perhaps if you email them, they'll let you know the dimensions they suggest, or they be able to supply a set if that works for you. The quality of the pieces on mine is like the board: nice enough that I get pleasure looking at and handling them, but not so exquisitely perfect that I'm afraid to use them. For me, that's the sweet spot.
I was browsing the House of Chess web site and came across these:

They look quite interesting and attractive, but I've never heard anyone talking about them. How is the quality of these boards? In particular, how well protected are the pieces, and approximately what size range of pieces fit in the inserts?
