F.H. Ayres Chess sets

Sort:
Wes350

So, FH Ayres chess sets.

Probably a little underappreciated compared to Jaques.

I have seen them offered for sale in 4", 3.5" and 3".

So according to this ad they made them in Sizes 3 - 4 -5 -6 - 7. Would anyone happen to know what the sizing corresponds to ?

Here is an article about the Staunton scale. I don't know if that Ayres set uses this same scale.

The F.A: Yres originals don't fetch as much as an antique Jacques set, but they're not exactly cheap:

The only replica available at this time I think is from Chessbazaar (is there enything they don't make a replica of?), but it's also one of their "pricier" sets:

Camarrata also has a repo, but it is the 4" size. https://chessantiques.com/product/reproduction-ayres-staunton-chessmen/

Wish he did the size 5 or 6 repo - but 4" plus seems to be where the money is.

Nice.

I was willing to go without the box and just bought a set. So we'll see the verdict when it arrives.

The Ayres style does have a unique aesthetic compared to other staunton types. Rather interesting that it is not more widely copied in different sizes.

Antique Jacques set's, really are special , Just the prices have gone up over the years .

And with so many KO sets now .

I hope you got the set with the nice Knights & what size did you buy ?

I thought you were talking about the St. George set. My bad ;-)

What's the main difference between this Staunton set and Jaques?

Just a different aesthetic that seems unique and consistent with the design that Ayres made.

I own a large club "Ayres" with 4.5" kings. It's a lovely set.

I own many Ayres chess sets and while I love the beauty of all the pieces I must admit that the knights are too short compared to other pieces. Staunton Castle has reproduced the Ayres set in ebony wood and I really love it specially as the knights are taller and more proportionate. Ayres was surely a great company but British Chess Company and Jaques of London produced higher quality sets.

We want pics, please!!! Perhaps a shot of just the knights of all your Ayres sets to document in time a comparative look?
I get where you are coming from the knights are on the smaller side.

Bunky777 SpanishStallion can not back up anything that he writes , He's a known spammer on CB&E , he's been blocked + banned then come back with a new names over the years , His name is Kevin he's sell's 2nd rate chess sets on e bay & like to slander Indian chess makers + spam threads . grin Very sad Man ?

Bunky 777: have different sizes of Ayres sets and while I must admit the 4” king Ayres enjoys wonderful pawns (the best piece in the set) and the kings and other pieces are also reasonably well-crafted but the knights in other available sizes are too short in relation to other pieces. Staunton Castle has reproduced the Ayres set which I also possess and the knights are very well l-made and taller than the original Ayres. Ayres has also produced several different sizes in travel sets which are really beautiful. Despite my chess knowledge and experience, I cannot really understand why Ayres made its knights so short. For copyright reasons I do not upload photos of my chess collection as in the past Indian chess makers used the photos to copy several of their current chess sets and I wouldn’t be cajoled.
BCC in my opinion was much ahead of Ayres when it comes to quality and you might be more interested in their sets many of which have been my favourites for many years.
