Finding a chess set with an elegant knight

Hello everyone,

I have been searching for a wooden chess set for quite a while now for my boyfriend's birthday. I was surprised by how many chess sets I did not like, because of the way the knight is made. Obviously, this is just personal prefernce, but I find most knights either too big (looking like the most important piece), too "fancy" (with crazy manes and jewelry and whatnot), too mean-looking or too blunt. I found one set which I thought was perfect, but unfortunately, it is sold out (see the picture).

If anyone knows of similiar chess pieces (or just sets with "elegant" knights, not too fancy but very nicely made), I would appreciate it very much.

Best regards and thanks for any help!

Similar knight from Staunton Castle is available on Etsy.

Don't mind the color, the products photographer is not the best in the world so to speak.

A review by user mdero83 for the Staunton Castle Elite Series can be found here.

One-piece knights can be simple and stylish - while I do not have this set, I think it is elegant:

I second @TheOneCalledMichael in post2. That’s the same set I thought of when I saw your picture. Staunton Castle makes first class chess sets.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I agree that the elite series is very similar and it is the one I am leaning towards at the moment, even though I like the knight in the HoS Cremona Series (the one I posted above) a little bit more, because I feel like it has somewhat more refined facial features and is a bit slimmer (sorry for the nitpickyness). But I also really like the Piatigorsky series that @Powderdigit suggested, so those are definitely my two favorite options. I'm still open for further suggestions though, I started looking quite early on because I was afraid of long shipping times, turns out I should have been more afraid of my indecisiveness wink.png

Nitpickyness over knights?  Perish the thought! tongue.png

Hang out more, we'll spend all your money... wink.png

If you wander around the Indian manufacturer sites you'll find a exceptionally wide range of elegant knights.  I think your first choice is excellent (even though out-of-stock at HoS).  The Staunton Castle version isn't just similar, it's identical to my eye.  SC is known to have done work for HoS so it's very likely that their's is the "back door" model, a truly reprehensible practice (if unsanctioned by the original set designers) seen mostly from Indian manufacturers but that's for the lawyers to sort out some day.

Take into account with the knights that you like - can be prone to hard knocks  or even get dropped on the floor / I would never buy knights with ears that stick up, as this looks like a weak point in it's design /  Accident's can & will happen , cry.png

Bishops with miter cuts that go through the ball top seem more prone to breakage from accidents. It's hanging on by a sliver of wood. The King's crown finial. Pointy bits on a Queen's coronet. All prone to breakage from drops. Knight ears are no different.

Still would rather have my knights ears more rounded as in this design ears stick out to high  . As op is looking for a nice "elegant" knights,  good to forewarn cry.png ,

Still it's a nice set of knights wink.png

larixxxx,

Of my many sets, the Attica set from Staunton Castle has to be my favorite (also available in ebony). Regal-looking knights. Not too fancy. Extremely well crafted!

@larixxxx -

Be sure the pieces are properly sized to the board....

Chess Set Sizing - Pieces vs Board...

The primary sizing criteria for the set and board is that of the board's square size vs King base diameter...
A good rule of thumb is...
King base diameter = 0.75 * square size
or equivalently....
Square size = 1.33 * King base diameter
Any variation from these ratios, or the size of individual pieces and pawns is a matter of personal preference...
