First book on positional chess?

Simple Chess by Stean
Small book. Great ideas and worth re-reading 100s of times :)
If your chess.com is an accurate reflection of your actual playing strength, I'd suggest going a bit more easy with Jeff Coakley's "Winning Chess Strategies" for kids. (don't be put off by the "for kids" title....the book is BRILLIANT for adults starting out with strategy as well)

aidin299,
I do not mean to claim that a book alone deserves credit for my improvement, because constant play paid a huge part in my playing strength improvement. But I also remember as a young teenager, I had almost no chess texts save the Euwe book, and I still credit the study of this book with my increase in positional understanding and resulting contribution rating growth.
Can a single book make a difference? Consider the following excerpt from IM Jeremy Silman's book reviews on his website:
THE ART OF CHESS COMBINATION by Eugene Znosko-Borovsky (Dover, 212 pages). I read it when I was 13 years old and gained hundreds of rating points as a result.
I think a book can make a difference. In my case were two: General Treatise of Chess by Roberto Grau (in spanish) a big fat 4 book collection considered the chess bible in spanish. I have read a ton in english and the most accurate to Grau's approach is the Jeremy Silman "How to reassess your chess". It worth it. The other one was "My best games" from Alekhine; you can learn A LOT from those books.
Highly recommended.Good Luck.
