NOW SOLD: Jaques Staunton Tournament Chessmen/Box and Jaques London Board (1910-1915)

I have decided to sell my Jaques Staunton Tournament Chessmen/Box and Jaques London Board. The reason for the sale is because the tournament sized set is just unfortunately too big for my small London flat.

Jaques Staunton Tournament Chessmen/Box

After reading Alan Fersht's guidebook, I understand that the chessmen are dated from 1910 - 1915 and classified under the "Marshall" codex.

As you can see from the pictures, the set is in very good condition for over 100 years old and seems to be in fully original and un-repaired condition. The mahogany box does not have any cracks and the label/baize interior is also is very good condition, which is rare for the age. It also comes with the locking key, which works without any issues.

All the chessmen are heavy lead weighted and the baize is almost intact on all the black pieces. On the white boxwood pieces, at least six have some baize loss, in varying degrees. The black ebony pieces appear undamaged and for the white pieces, the Queen has one point chipped on her crown and one pawn has a small chip in the base. Otherwise, the remaining white pieces appear undamaged.

Both kings are stamped 'JAQUES LONDON' and the king-side rooks and knights also bear a crown stamp in traditional fashion. The set also retains the original French polished finish. The King height is 9cm for size reference.

I also received a book with the Chessmen/Box titled: "The Chess-Player's Text Book" by Howard Staunton. I suspect that it was included with the original purchase of the Chessmen/Box, as it seems to be from a similar time period. I will include this with the sale as it is quite nice to keep together as a set for a potential purchaser.

These chessmen can sell for around £2,000 alone and the value is only going up.

Jaques London Board

I also sourced a Jaques London Board from the same time period (1900-1930), which as you can see from the pictures pairs beautifully with the chessmen. This has an original mahogany frame and is inlaid with satinwood/rosewood with traditional double-mitred corners.

The construction and materials used pre-WW2 on these boards are much more extravagant than the later style Jaques stamped boards and this shows in the quality.

These early 20th century Jaques boards are extremely rare and difficult to source, especially in good condition, which can be shown by a lack of previous sales on eBay or elsewhere online. They can also sell for a higher price than a set of chessmen due to their rarity - even over £2,000 alone.

The board size is 51cm across with a square size of 5.5cm. It is reverse stamped 'JAQUES LONDON' and retains the original French polished finish.

I am willing to sell this whole set for £2,000, which is much less than any dealer would offer. I would rather pass this on to someone who will enjoy it and has the space to properly use it.

To buy this set separately, if you are able to source one, I believe would cost in the region of £3,000 - £4,000 based on information available online so this could be a good opportunity for someone in the market for a matched set from the same era.

It is available for collection from Central London or postage can be arranged at buyers cost/risk and shipped once cleared funds received.

If any further pictures/information are required, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Can you update the posting with the height of the King, square size of the board, and maybe a close up pic of the King base stamping? Thanks!

Wow. Beautiful wood grain on the white pieces. A stunning set for sure.

Good luck Shaun are you potentially separating the board from the set?

Thank you.

I am looking to sell as a set initially (as it was a  very difficult process to pair the Jaques chessmen and board from the same time period and I would hope that someone appreciates and uses it as a matching set).

If this is not possible and there is interest individually for each, then I may be willing to sell separately.

From the photos, it looks like a magnificent set in great condition! What a fine set. The board looks wonderful as well. Doesn't look warped or bowed at all. I wish I had the quid to spare /:

Do you have closeups of the damage on the queen and pawn?

Great set Shaun, I'm sure you'll have no problem selling it for that price. Thanks for the pics, I have a Marshall repro and it's good to compare. It's good to see that apart from some slight differences in the knights my set is pretty accurate.

QueenClaudia2003

I'm either blind or stupid possibly both but where is link to the chess set 🤔 .

They have now being re-added.

The set is available again as the dealer sale fell through and is also listed on eBay at £2,200 due to the seller fees: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255329116932

If anyone would like any more information/pictures, please do let me know.

Many thanks,
Shaun

nobody wants the set, which was obv as nobody wants to pay the price of a used car for a dirty, broken and possibly even health-damaging chess set (mold is a serious danger guys).

given these circumstances, 20$ is my last offer to you, free shipping ofcourse.

Are you kidding ??? What the **** are you talking about man ? You are a biggest looser i ever seen in my life ! You was doing PIPI in your pampers when i was beating players much more stronger then you! You are not proffesional, because proffesionals knew how to lose and congratulate opponents, you are like a girl crying after i beat you! Be brave, be honest to yourself and stop this trush talkings!!! Everybody know that i am very good blitz player, i can win anyone in the world in single game! And "w"esley "s"o is nobody for me, just a player who are crying every single time when loosing, ( remember what you say about Firouzja ) !!! Stop playing with my name, i deserve to have a good name during whole my chess carrier, I am Officially inviting you to OTB blitz match with the Prize fund! Both of us will invest 5000$ and winner takes it all!
I suggest all other people who's intrested in this situation, just take a look at my results in 2016 and 2017 Blitz World championships, and that should be enough... No need to listen for every crying babe, Tigran Petrosyan is always play Fair ! And if someone will continue Officially talk about me like that, we will meet in Court! God bless with true! True will never die ! Liers will kicked off...

Some interest from dealers and private buyers but this is still available.

Also open to split the board and pieces for anyone looking.

If it doesn’t sell in the next couple of weeks, I will probably put this to an auction in the UK.

Thanks all.

Just to confirm this is now sold.

Thanks to everyone who showed an interest.
