Free printable chessboards!

Hello everyone,

Recently I was browsing the internet in search of a good printable chess board. As expected I did not find anything that came even close of what I was searching for. So I designed my own one especially for printing and thats what I want to share with you.

This board is perfect for so many different applications. Stop ruining your expensive boards and wearing out these cardboard tournament sets! Get yourself one of these for free and if it brakes make yourself a new one! Additionally you can buy sticky transparant foil to wrap your board in (just like I did, check out the photo down below), or you can laminate the board (even better). Light weight, quick and so effective!

Now how it works:

The board is made out of 2 parts both printed separately to a DIN A4 sized page. A left part and a right part. The square size is about 3.5 cm x 3.5 cm (1.37 in x 1.37 in) with a total size of roughly 29 cm X 29 cm (11.41 in x 11.41 in). This is the biggest size of board that I can fit neatly on two DIN A4 pages. The resolution is 300 DPI so perfect for printing.

Right now I made 2 color variations: a green/white board and a board in the colors of the Croatian flag. If you guys like them I can make more or make custom artistic ones if you have some requests. Maybe also a bigger board that can be printed on a single A3 sized page.

Instructions:

1: Choose one of the boards from the links down below and download the .zip file.

2: Unpack the PNG and JPEG folder. (Password is: ratnik)

3: Open the PNG folder and print out both files (PNG is better suited for printing try avoiding the JPG files). Be sure that you print on A4 size paper and uncheck the realign box! Choose a resolution of at least 300 DPI.

4: Use the red guide line to cut away the unneeded paper. Use a boxcutter with fresh blades and a ruler to get a perfect straight clean cut. (Cut along the edge that faces the board.)

5: Go ahead and use sticky transparant foil to wrap your board in or you can laminate the board (even better).

Could you make one in off white, maybe beige? My main gripe with vinyl boards is they come in many color selectios, combined with glaring white. I was considering making a board with a couple pieces of smooth nice plywood I have. Instead of painting squares it would be cool just to put the paper one on, like decoupage or something.

RatnikHR

Yes I can do that. Head over to Color Picker and select the exact colors you want and send the color codes to me.

thanks a lot RatnikHR!

I wonder if you maybe prepared bigger boards, suitable for printing in A3 size?

Thank you. I resized to print on US 8.5x14 in. paper, and decoupaged the pieces to a scrap piece of thin birch plywood. Fantastic $1 chessboard!

Hi everyone. I know it's been a few years, but I wanted to share the chessboard I made for printing with you guys so that you. My issue was, that I need a very large chessboard which is usually hard to print and which one couldn't find anywhere.  Also, I wanted to have the luxurious feeling of a rich-textured wood board, so I made an effort to create one.

Features

  • large: 50 mm field size (or smaller)
  • luxurious wood texture (or two-coloured)
  • easy and convenient to make out of only 4 A4 papers

Please find the files for printing and instructions on how to make and customize it below:

How do you open XCF format of the files? Do I need to download any software for it?

Thanks to RatnikHR for these printable boards. I used the green and white version but wanted one that was black and white so I merged his files and changed the color. You can grab it here as a Photoshop .psd file or a .jpg file.

I made a few more slight refinements to my travel board. I printed the black and white version I posted above on glossy photo paper then I used clear laminating vinyl I got from Amazon to cover and protect it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FDL8R1R/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

The first one I made had some air bubbles due to me not knowing how to apply the vinyl. The 2nd version you see came out much better with barely any issues. I then cut another piece of plastic card to back it. I skipped the felt back since it's stable on it's own and I wanted it as flat as possible.

I think it came out really good. I can slip it into a manilla envelope and into my backpack.

Instead of printing a different color than white, maybe buy non-white paper to print on?

I always have a small stack of slightly cream-colored paper at home for printing glare-free sheet music, so maybe something like that could be used for chess boards as well

I think you could use the colour card used by some spanish board makers. Their boards are great.

Hmmm... this is too fishy. surprise

I must say, that both your diction and willingness to steer folks to chessbazaar site sound like you are one or more of the following: a bot, a paid reviewer, or even a shill working diligently to get more business for that site. What gives @michealbrock? Not trying to start mischief, but simply want to know if my hunch is correct. If you are wondering... I am a real person, and chess player. Have a pleasant day!
